I`ve been asked to dj a vernissage of an exhibition of an artist from Marocco called Nabil El Makhloufi and they wish to hear northern african music. I have got lots of african music but mostly from south of the sahara. Therefore I don`t know much about northern african music.
The music I`m looking for can be old or new and It must not necessarily be dance music. It would be great if you could recommend me some jazzy, funky and soulful stuff. I`m not that keen on traditional arabic sounding music.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks! That sounds like the stuff I`m looking for. Keep em coming.
This is one interesting comp I'd recommend You to listen.... http://www.discogs.com/Various-1970s-Algerian-Proto-Rai-Underground/release/1487108
This one is great! I wouldn`t mind a rip of it. ;-) Got one?
Thanks! That compilation is rather pricey unfortunatly.
It's actually a really diverse genre, and a lot of sounds not a lot like this.
EDIT: I think that the "Rough Guide to Rai" or something like that, is pretty good for a basic understanding. There's a lot of rai music available - especially through French world music channels - but a lot of the more readily available stuff isn't so good. It's often a bit "overdone" and syrupy in my experience.
Sublime Frequencies has some really dope North African music, also.
Those are my favorites, but they have a whole bunch of other cool North African stuff, too. You should check their catalog if you're interested.
Great, thanks! It`s good that the music at sublimefrequencies is downloadable as well. I`ll definetly check it out,
and also Nas el Giwan
Can you recommend some songs by them which I should check out?

Another strutter was a tad faster thany you and was kind enough to pm me a download link. But thanky anyway.
The knowledge on obscure music over here is really amazing. Thanks everybody,
I`m also considering to play some northern african themed music like this one:
Any recommendations?

I have some weird northern african 45's.. not on google shit.
Good shit!
Strictly it's not northern african since the band are French, but it sounds like it fits the bill for what you want.
