Adding effects to mixes

Kind of an embarrassing question here.

What is the cheapest way to add effects (like echoing) to mixes? I understand you can do this with a Rane mixer, etc, but I guess I'm more interested in (free, or super cheap) post-production software that can do this for me.

Thoughts?

    audacity has built in effects, echo being one of them

    Alright, I don't think what I'm looking for is an echo effect, actually.

    Horns at 2:18 sound like they were recorded in a large-ass room with a little "echoing" happening. Check clip:

    I like Soundforge. You can DL a free copy for 30 days, and then pick up an el cheapo version for like $60.

    with a macbook you probably have garageband no?

    All you need is some sound editing software that supports VST effects.

    I had a lot of issues using VST's with Audacity, but that was an old version - it may be more compatible now.

    I tend to use Steinberg WaveLab for working with WAVs.

    There are free VST effects all over the net - just Google it.

    Then you install one into the plugin directory of your sound editor. Launch the sound editor, highlight a portion of sound you want to add an effect to, and boo ya.

    If you're specifically after some echo effects, here are the names of some free VSTs on the net..
