Recording Analog vs. Digital...

A friend of mine is considering recording some tracks with his band. He would like to record analog but since that seems to be more expensive in his part of the world some of the other members of the band suggested to record digital and then play the mix to tape. The latter would be the cheaper of the two.

Does the digital transfer to tape give the same or almost the same result?

I'm not sure, but I think the results won't be the same.

I've heard of ppl recording to 2" tape and then mixing it digitally.

In particular, you won't get that analog drum sound.

That was standard at the studio I worked at. Record to Protools, mix down to 1/2". Sounds great if you know what you are doing.

Besides the drum sound can anybody explain what the difference will be between the two recording techniques in the end?
