hey dudes, i need help. so against my better judgement, my partner is out there right now shooting stuff for a project. unfortunately, all the dudes we know from nyc are crusty old dudes that can only point to shit that used to be there. what is left from pre-giuliani nyc? like how far do we need to be from city center to actually see real new york? bronx and queens arent cutting it as far as what we need. is there any dirt left in new york? help me!

what do you mean? you need old new york looking backdrops for photos? take the j train out past marcy. lots of good elevated train grime.

  • i was actually looking for an entrance into the old subway systems. i know this is far fetched, but that would be ideal. anything above ground isnt really doing it for us. thanks though, i think my dude got some train footage on his way out to jamaica, q

East New York in Brooklyn or parts of The South Bronx. Only grimy areas left in NYC.

  • thanks dudes. yeah, our contacts are in the south bronx but even that is kinda nice. theres some sort of new law out there where the city actually cleans up the projects cuz theyre all super clean.

no tips on the subway system tho, no? apparently theres an underground art gallery in the system but dudes are being super tight about that info.

I wouldnt be so sure about that... there's plenty of grime all over the outer boroughs. especially after all this snow is melting away. Theres trash and potholes everywhere. If by grime, you mean murders...then yes, South BX, East NY, Brownsville, Canarse, Rockaways, ect.

There are some great old subway entrances in Washington Heights, and up in Harlem

Yeah there's still plenty of grime, even in LES left.

Shit, in its own right, Brighton Beach is the final motherfucking frontier.

Take the N or W way into Brook-lyn and get off in no man's land. Shit is still dirty.

Not Needle Park Dirty, but gritty shit.

Take the 6 train deep into The Bronx.

    Take the F into Queens.

Shit, take the train to Queensbridge and tell me bout shit.

    The Yuppie shit isnt everywhere.

  • its cool dudes. thanks. i think im just gonna go out there and sort it out myself.

  • you don't need to go far at all. the j train stop at city hall doesn't just look grimy as hell it looks like 1931 in there, with some current dilapidation crust that is verging on post-apocalyptic looking, old IRT style.

this sounds specific and awesome. thanks!

  • Weird, I was going to start a similar thread, my partner and I are out there soon and my girl wants to shoot some decay / abandoned spots.

Thanks for the suggestions, more specific spots like the one above would be rad.

  • i think if you get on most train lines and take them out of manhattan for 5-10 stops plus, you'll find stuff easily, depending on the line. grit isn't inaccessible here.

here's some video / links. this info is pretty easy to find on the internet, i just don't know how current it is to now, though. also, links to the underground art gallery you made reference to.

most of the J train stops in manhattan are pretty crummy/crumbly...

    Great thraed

  • The Bowery J stp is pretty dilapidated too. It looks like it was once pretty happening, probably when the El was still there.

What about Eighth Avenue? The Holland Bar? Lower east Side south of East Broadway also Chinatown under the Manhattan Bridge. Red Hook is still pretty gritty, maybe more empty than edgy. Boro Park is still like a time machine back to 16th century Poland. Brighton is one of the few remaining ethnic neigborhoods.

If you stay on the Lex Local 6 train after the final stop at Brooklyn Bridge, you can ride it through the old City Hall loop. The station is pretty well preserved and well lit so you can see it out the window.

Queens is all cemetaries, nothing changes there.

  • This is a cool site of abandoned stations

How about visiting Berlin to see some grime? Some say it*s like NYC in the 80s. But better hurry, they cleaning everything rapidly.

  • I like the 1 train platform on the 168th St stop. Subway station from Ghostbusters 2 if I'm not mistaken.

Shig you should check out the Freedom Tunnel all the way on the west side. There used to be a few entrances along Riverside Ave, but I haven't been in a really long time. I heard a lot of the stuff is buffed, but its still a cool place, be careful.

LOL. 2 completely opposite cities. Some people are saying that there was a certain art scene in Berlin (now mostly moved on) that could have been compared to parts of NYC art scene in the 80s, but the comparison stops there on every other level.

I'd say just ask the Oz rappers where and what is up in NYC.

    b/w

Make like Redman and take the A train to the Leff. Most of (non yuppie) Brooklyn is turning into Taco shops and self storage, but it's still grimy. Or you could get on the rooftops next to the Manhattan Bridge. Between the graf and pigeon shit, you got all the grime you need.

On that note, does anyone know for sure where the BT Express cover was shot? It looks like it could be Marcy J.

Im gonna be the asshole here.

I love me some nostalgia and old NYC too, but what the fascination?

I remember in art school a buddy(small town) of mine ran to NYC, and took photos of Homeless Folks.

    Seriously?

THAT SHIT IS SO FUCKIN' CLICHE.
