Don't know how many folks outside of NOLA know about Magnolia Shorty, but around here she's a local legend. She basically got adopted by Baby/Birdman of Cash Money Records and put out her first material on the label when she was like 14 years old. Got her name from Soulja Slim, who was known as Magnolia Slim at the time.

She had recently gotten a ton of renewed interest because of "Smoking Gun", a bounce remix that gets played at almost every party in New Orleans these days (no, it's not about violence), and her featured spot on "My Boy", a huge regional hit this summer by teen singer Kourtney Heart.

Magnolia Shorty was the best--she had a strong distinctive voice that made her stand out from all the other bounce artists, and she was just starting to get put on lots more gigs and getting ready to do more recording.

So sad. She was riding in the car around noon today with a guy who had gotten out of jail a week ago and had a hit out on him. Dudes sprayed their car killing both of them, and left Magnolia Shorty with more than 20 bullets.

RIP to one of bounce's finest.
