I know that there are some serious kung fu movie heads on this site. So i'm looking for some DVD recommendations.Obviously I know the big ones (Enter The Dragon, Crouching Tiger, Kung Fu Hustle etc). I'm looking for good movies with great stories and fight sequences. Subtitles are fine, I actually prefer them.So Soulstrut... I challenge you!

WOW Are all this on DVD now?

Might have to upgrade. A lot of my VHS were low budget so they are starting to get jumpy.

Man.... I don't know about 'good ones' because most of them are the same. I've only seen maybe 30 or so, but I own a ton. My personal favorite is Avenging Eagle because a lot of the characters each had a unique weapon. I know a lot of people don't like the swords and shit, but I liked Avenging Eagle. The Battle Wizard was also interesting because it mixed in odd characters and magic, not the typical fighting shit only. Outside of that Chan is your best bet. Chan's the man

BTW: I have a shop out here and I have maybe 80+ in stock. If you're looking to stock up, I can run it. I don't run the dub joints however, only the subb'd but they are all remastered

This is one movie I can never decide if I like the subbed version or the dubbed version more.

I'm usually a purist and like subs. But the dubbed version holds a special place...

This might be stretchin' it a bit......................but

Not your classic action scene style but the "Samurai Way" angle is alright.
Im not some RZA groupie either.........just sayin.

  • THE CRIPPLED MASTERS

    I liked Avenging Eagle.

I just copped this brand new off Amazon for $6. The reviews on there placed this very highly too.

  • I worked in a videostore for years and couldn't help watching ALL kung fu tapes. I have to admit not many stuck to my mind. I like The Crippled Masters and One Armed Swordsman, but that's more for the bizarro stuff. I remember enjoying Mio nome ?? Shanghai Joe, a spaghetti take on the genre. The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires is nice too (Hammer meets Shaw).

    Anyone seen this?:

"Directed" by the French situationist Rene Vienet, this film is an exercise in intellectual absurdity. A Hong Kong martial arts movie overdubbed with French political diatribes and philosophies, designed to entertain and amuse, while proving a number of artistic and political points.

Eh, I'm really more into the stuff that's off the track.

It's tough to say... But if your just starting off, maybe grab Master Killer or Five Deadly Venoms.

Watching those two is a good way to start off getting into fu flicks. Then you could move onto more legendary as well as silly martial art's flix.

I first saw Master Killer in the mid 80's at this spot in the old china town of Toronto. It was the first fu flick I ever saw in a theater. I've been hooked ever since. Over 10 years later I saw it again in a porn theater someone had rented out to show it an OG Print... Tarantino was there that night on a date.
When quotes Wu Tang used played, people shouted out! It was a good night.

I wish I had more of my VHS bootleg collection on DVD tho... I tried watching a few the other day and it was harsh.

I'm more into the newer shit...

    Legend of Zu

    Storm Riders

    Shaolin Soccer

    The Bride With White Hair

    The Duel

    stuff like that...

Kung Fu Hustle was real dope too.

  • Tony Jaa is on some serious next shit. Rumour has it that he & Jackie Chan are working on Drunken Master 3. Previews of "Tom yum goong" looks fuckin' nuts.

confirming my "cheapest man alive" repuation, gotta big up the dollar store DVD's here in Brooklyn... recently scored:

chinese hercules (w/ yr man Bolo from Enter the Dragon)
    Streetfigher
Sister Streetfighter (both w/ sonny cheeba... in streetfighter, sonny rips a dude's balls off...)
secret of shaolin poles (just ill...)
shaolin invincibles (retarded, yet features "kung fu trained gorillas")

if you access to 99 cent kung fu DVDs, i would def. recommend picking some up... for actual GOOD movies, i recently saw and liked:

    come drink with me
    executioners from shaolin

Drunken Master is my shid. I was once told my soccer style is that of the Drunken Master. You just can't defend against it. Apparently I also have a "cultured" left foot. Anyway, I watched my first ever boot last night. Wedding Crashers. Fucking terrible, apart from when the dudes filming it started to snicker. I didn't realize you got that with the deal.

Kung Fu Hustle is probably funnier and has better use of f/x than any movie I've seen in the last 4 years (which is 3).

Movies SUCK! If you ever see a movie and it changes your life, you had no life to begin with. Records however... just means you had no records to begin with.

    My favorites are:

the dragon's inn (the old one)
master of the fluying guillotine (with the one-armed boxer)
    ninja in a dragon's denn
    china swordsman 1&2
a touch of zen (highly recommended)

    and the more b-movie/trash-like:

    clones of bruce lee
    bruce li vs supermen
    the dragon lives again
    drunken wu-tang

here you can download some b-movie kungfu movies for free:

  • These 4 are some of my favorites although there are many more.

  • Legend of a fighter

    Hellz wind staff

Water Margin is one of my favorites with Mei Sheng Fan's and Lily Ho's roles standing out. Seems like the Shaws put more into the budget considering the production value and beautifully filmed scenery. Boxer's Omen is from another world...
