Hey 45 collectors and/or music lovers in general!

What are your top 5 soul 45 tunes of the moment?
Be they straight soul, modern, funky or northern lay down your top 5 picks (45 ONLY)

Lust - I like Spending My Time With You. Modern crossover joint. Uptempo with flu-like contagious hooks

The Sequins - Someday You'll Be Mine. Just an excellent piece of mid tempo female soul. If you don't like this you probably have no soul left.

Kool and Together - Sitting on a Red Hot Stove. As hot as or hotter than an actual red hot stove.

Ricky Allen - No Better Time Than Now. Slow, drinking-whiskey-in-a-swamp vibes.

Melodics - Ain't that Sharing My Love. Great midtempo falsetto vocal joint.

This list will undoubtedly change tomorrow

    This week:

Volcanos "Laws of Love", One of my two "gateway" northern records. Has had a nice revival at my house over the last few days

Lou Courtney "If the Shoe Fits", Great stomper. I never spun this out because it has kind of a weird, wussy flute intro, but when I finally dropped it last friday the floor packed right up.

Accents "New Girl", awesome and classic street corner soul

The Mandells "Think Back", the current incarnation of "greatest pure soul song ever written". There's

The Naturals "I'm the One", dreamy early/group mid-tempo cheapie, really does the trick.

    bonus:

Lightnin' Slim "I'm Warning You Baby" , raw R&B, love finding Excellos I've never seen before, espcially when they're a dollar

Gino Washington - Like My Baby - Mala

Jerri Jackson - Let Me Try - Parallax

Ohio Players - Here Today and Gone Tomorrow - Capitol

Lee Moses - How Much Longer/I'm Sad About It - Musicor

Jackie Shane - Comin' Down - Sue

I've not been able to get into that Lamont Dozier stuff, I recently even got rid of the "Fish Ain't Bitin" 45.

I can see where it would be too slick/70's for you - I generally lean toward the 60's and the rawness (and lately earlier and earlier in the 60's, too. 1963 is like "my year" these days haha) myself, but something about that Dozier record just really works for me. It's definitely on the "grown n sexy" tip.

The Main Ingredient--"You Can Call Me Rover" (This one is pretty much always in rotation)

    Bettye LaVette--"Hey Love" (Amazing cover)

    Lee Moses--"Time and Place"

The Rock--"Charlie Brother We've Got To Love One Another"

The Gap Band--"Yearning for Your Love" (I don't know why, but I've been playing the shit out of this one of late)

Here it is - yeah, it's more of a knock-off of the Richard Berry song used to make a tribute to the TV show "Have Gun Will travel" that was on the air at the time ... totally awesome, though - especially that guitar solo!

Wouldn't Richard Berry's song have been a riff on the TV show? Not the music but the name I mean.

  • Willie Hutch - Brother's Gonna Work It Out (Motown)
Al Kent - Where Do I Go From Here (Ric Tic)
Eddie and the De-Havelons - Baby Dumplins (Peacock)
Syl Johnson - Kiss By Kiss (Twinight)
