Quit job - traveling - Rome, Italy

Been a while since posting but I have quit my job in Washington D.C. and before starting my new one back in Ann Arbor, MI, I plan on doing some travel to see family in Greece. On the short trip (less than 2 weeks), I was planning on stopping in Rome to do the regular tourist thing for a couple days to break the monotony of seeing my somewhat older family (almost everyone is well over 50...I'm 27) in Thessaloniki.
I have no connections in Rome though, so can any strutters offer advice on places to stay? Google offers pages and pages of reviews for hotels, but nothing really narrows it down for me. Any Italian strutters on the strut care to meet up?
