Scanning and organizing old photos (software-R)

So, for years I've had a box in the back of my closet with all my photos from over the years. I've probably got a couple thousand, from every period of my life, and every once in a while I've looked into getting a tray-loading scanner that would be able to a do a decent job digitizing them all, but they always look crazy expensive. As of Friday, my office has now been outfitted with a giant copier/fax machine/scanner thing.
I just took a look, and it has a setting to scan glossy color photos at like 600 dpi. Pretty excited to dig the box out of my closet and finally digitize it after all these years, but my next thought is how am I gonna crop and organize all these photos. Anything that people recommend for this kind of stuff? I'm on a pc, but have access to Mac if there's something people really like. Right now, I really like picassa, but I'm already dreading the idea of having to manually crop 2000 photos. Who's got something better for me?
