Taking a photography class next semester. The professor told me I will need a film SLR that is not completely automatic, but auto features and manual overrides are okay. Any ideas for a young man not fabulously well to do? Could I snatch up something decent sub-$200? Thanks!

you will be able to get a cheap body and maybe a starter lens for that kind of money, but a lot of the good film zoom and portrait lenses work on DSLR's too so the price hasn't really ever come down that much

Try checking out KEH.com. You should be able to get something for well under $200. Maybe check out a Canon A1 or AE1 with the FD 50/F1.4 standard lens? They grade conservatively and anything graded "bargain" is totally usable.
