Don't think I posted or read the first thread.

What struck me when I listened last week is that OTW is directed at an older demographic than Thrill.

You don't have to relisten to know that OTW is straight forward collection of dance tunes and ballads.
Thrill is a higher concept lp filled with stories.

Ill agree that Thriller is more of a Concept, but i think there are stories w/in OTW as well.

She's Out Of My Life - love story/hearbreak
Off The Wall - dude pretty much explains his whole outlook on life and clues u in on what he's about
Working Day & Night - blue collar perspective outside of his lifestyle
    Girlfriend - love story/infidelity
Rock With You - F*ck With You.....All Night!
Burn This Disco Out - "so DJ spin the sounds"
Dont Stop Til You Get Enough - f*ckin

Could be describing almost any pop lp.

But stories about the Funk of 40,000 years and street fights and paternity suits are fewer and farther between, thus hold more power as stories. You still have to include the F*ck all night songs, it's a law or something, but the story has been told.

And yet the appeal of Thriller graps pre-teens, while OTW is more for those who are already out clubbing.

I will say that at my store, we've sold more than twice as many copies of Thriller since June 25th, and that doesn't count the 25th anniversary edition. San Jose votes overwhelmingly for Thriller.

OTW. No gimmicks. No hackneyed "Funk of 40,000 years". No Paul McCartney.

Listening to "I Can't Help It" now. Sounds like magic.

    Pretty much this.

Thriller is better. I wish I could listen to Thriller with fresh ears. It's a mind F*ck on so many levels. Off the Wall, while great, has a couple week cuts and is a bit too heavy on the Stevie Wonder influence. Thriller is 100% Michael.

IMHO the clurb bangers + ballads outweigh the pop-schlock and Macca invasion on Thriller.

I get more clurb compliance out of Thriller-era cuts eg "Billie Jean" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something" and "P.Y.T."... of course, OTW works when there's old geezers like you guys that want to do the electric slide at the wedding or some shit. Haha.

    Also, "Human Nature" ftw.

    Also, "Human Nature" ftw.

My favorite MJ cut of all time.

Unlike a lot of people, I was not mad at John Mayer's homage at the funeral.

Hmmm..."I Can't Help It" + "Rock WIth You" vs "PYT" + "Human Nature."

I don't know if I can call this definitively. "PYT" doesn't quite age as well for me but "Human Nature" is so damn strong.

Song for song, "Billie Jean" sons anything comparable on OTW but I'd also say, "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" > "Wanna Be Starting Something" EXCEPT for the "mama makossa" ending which pretty much sons, well, everything.

In terms of title tracks though, "Off the Wall" > "Thriller"

I dont understand why these are being pitted against one another?

She's Out of My Life is the BALLAD of OTW. That was part of his live shows.
Rock With You - mid tempo stepper
I cant help it - head bopping slow to mid tempo. Not a Quiet Storm joint.

PYT - Banger - ladies choice dance floor filler
    Human Nature - Incredible ballad

    b/w

    OTW = Streets

    Thriller - Suburbs & DJStyles52 types

Thriller is 100% Michael........Temperton(Thriller,Lady In My Life,Baby Be Mine),Ingram/Jones(PYT), Bettis (Human Nature).

Lady In My Life is that shit if ur talmbout ballads.

Real quiet storm shit. Im not f*ckin to Human Nature.

    Temperton OTW > Temperton Thriller

  • Thriller- because it sort of stream-lined and updated the "off the wall" sound and added conceptual elements - also the videos and accompanying dance routines for Thriller should also be considered...

    WRONG.

OTW = discos. "Leave the 9 to 5 up on the shelf". GROWN.

Thriller = playgrounds. "Did you see Mike moonwalk???" KIDS.

Shit wasn't *less* LBE or something. I know plenty of Mary's (elder Becky's... lol) that need to hear "Don't Stop 'Til/Off The Wall/Rock With You" in order to get their groove on.
