If you had to keep one of these, which one would it be & why? I'm leaning towards Pure Smokey purely because A Quiet Storm seems a bit like the start of diminishing returns......

Definitely Pure Smokey. That record is great from start to finish.
When I started to get into soul and funk I just picked that one up for the afro shot on the cover not knowing what the record would be like.
Just played it again last week and it still stands as one of my all time favorite soul records.

I've never heard Quiet Storm, but Pure Smokey is definitely an underrated classic.

This is not the typical Smokey album. The song subjects are unusually heavy for him - male virginity, teen pregnancy, child custody, widowed mothers on the prowl, etc.. Of course, this isn't mentioned, implied or played up on the album cover, so nobody ever notices this. It's easy to flip past Pure Smokey and think it's just another LP of love songs, but he's actually stretching out a bit here.
