I was wondering about this, last few haven't been so good.

Crystal Antlers (from '08) is definitely worth checking out.

if you didn't like the last few, you probably wont like this one. personally, i liked the prog-rock direction of the last few albums, and this follows in that vein. however, this one is definitely a bit more bare bones (a la st&g)-- from what i understand, they've had to abandon the larger interscope recording budget since leaving the label, and the results are audible.

i know Deerhunter's Microcastle was released late last year, but since they played a secret show here last week and were incredible, I can't stop listening to it.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about this lot, although I haven't heard the album yet. Apparently, they're a Scottish band doing a kind of folk/Kraut/drone-rock thing. They're supposed to be terrific live.

I don't own the lp but whenever I hear Glasvegas I think maybe I should give it a listen.

i've been wondering about both of those albums, especially the zombi joint. i'm thinking about picking up one or both this weekend.

i don't have much to add. i've not picked up much rock stuff so far this year. i picked up the new animal collective album. i have no idea what happens in the middle of it. i zone out every time i listen to it. it needs to lose about 15 minutes.

The Wavves album is pretty good if you're into lo-fi garage punk.

I'm late on these guys, but I just discovered this band:

That animal collective album is blown up like that! The cd doesn't wave like that!

  • I'd recommend copping the Sore Eros lp before it's gone.

listening to this now, pretty cool. I don't hear much folk/drone so far, but one foot in Matador-y '90s indie rock and one foot in the Neu! school of Kraut is a fair description.

I like about 2/3 of the songs on that Animal Collective but agree that it could use some trimming.

Just heard these, both will be released next month, I highly recommend them. Jeniferever are from Sweden, while Alligators are from Bremerton, WA.

BLK JKS have an album dropping on Secretly Canadian. I think it should be out this year.
I'm definitely looking forward to that one.

Been bumping John Frusciante - The Empyrean. don't like RHCP either, it's just a nice record. Features the one Johnny Marr on a few songs too.

I wasn't really blown away by the Wavves. That Death EP rules my face, though.

every year I get moved less and less by new rock...havent even taken a shine to anything released this year (except Death, but its not really a new rock record)...

That Obits record I listed is really good, as is the Heavy Hands.

I have actually been impressed with alot of the newer stuff coming out
this year. Lots of good garage-type stuff, as long as you can handle the
derivative nature of neo-garage, which I get the feeling you might not

And guys, Death is not a 2009 rock record.

by the way, all the bands I listed can be heard in these two radio
shows I did recently, as I pulled the info above right from my playlists:

    http://wmbr.org/m3u/Late_Risers%27_Club_20090304_1000.m3u

    http://wmbr.org/m3u/Late_Risers%27_Club_20090318_1000.m3u

They are a mix of new releases and classic punk/metal/power pop from the 70's to now.

(also, at the beginning of each stream is the last 2-3 minutes of the show before me)

yeah living in the city with Goner Records World HQ puts you off to that stuff REALLY fast
