So-so musicians with great bands

I am listening to a Kip Hanrahan record right now and marveling at how great the band is: Daniel Ponce, Jerry Gonzalez, Nicky Marrero, Chico Freeman, Arto Lindsay, Byard Lancaster, George cartwright, Jamalaadeen Tacuma, Carla Bley, Billy Bang, Dom Um Ramao and ...... Kip Hanrahan. Makes me sing "one of these things is not like the others" in my head.Thinking of other examples where the bandleader/headliner's main skill is putting together a great band; Herbie Mann immediately comes to mind, as well as John Mayall.Others?
