What are the holidays like with your family?b, 21b, 21My family isn't Christian or anything, so we only celebrate Christmas for the materialistic aspects.b, 21b, 21Growing up, our gifts were just the things we saw our mom buy during one of her many shopping trips. No such thing as surprises from the parents. Lots of cousins around, us four oldest always stuck together. Now that 3 of us are in college, we've grown apart and I find myself counting down the days to go back to school.b, 21b, 21Any funny/strange Strutter family traditions/memories?

  • Christmas time with the family is great. Our traditions have changed over the years though, we use to always go to my uncle's (dad's brother) house for Christmas Eve. He'd have huge parties with 150+ people, the young kids would watch xmas movies all night, the teenagers would sneak drinks and hang out in the driveway, eat crazy amounts of food. Christmas day we'd go to my grandparent's (mom's side) house. They'd move the furniture on the living room and all the kids would play with their new toys on the rug while the adults looked on. Eat ridiculous amounts of food both days. But now my grandparents have passed away and my uncle isn't in the best health, so we have smaller more intimate parties. I miss the big parties but its still nice.b, 21b, 21The only tradition that still stands, that we've been doing since I can remember, is having waffles with ice cream and syrup on Christmas morning after opening presents. When I was 16 we added a mimosa or straight up champagne.

font class="post"1b, 21b, 21Same thing with us. My parents did the tree and gifts thing when we were young so we didn???t feel ???left out??? and now that we???re grown, they keep buying us stuff because they love giving us things and are worried we are sleeping in burlap bags, wearing bags for socks and are not enjoying the amazing world of chocolates and scotch. They have definitely pulled back spending amongst their friends because their kids are grown, too.b, 21We used to go to some amazing parties with overflowing sorrel&rum, never-ending calypso Christmas songs and much food and drinks and dancing.b, 21b, 21Now, we all get together one night at my parents and another night at Man???s family???s place (where there is plenty of sorrel&rum and food and definitely no dancing). The gift situation at their house is excessive and we just can???t keep up. We have asked year after year for just ONE gift each, but it never happens. It is pretty embarrassing and awkward for us. Now we just go after they???ve done all the gifts so it can be more about being together.

  • most Christmases are spent at moms house eating lots of tamales, bu??elos, champurrado, and maybe some brandy.b, 21b, 21One Christmas about 4 years ago, my brother, stepdad, and i slaughtered a pig. It was too dark out side and we sort of overcooked the carnitas so we were pissed.b, 21b, 21the last few Christmases have been lots of tamales and lots of movies
