Quote:h, 21b, 21 Lovers of apathy and irony, hipsters are connected through a global network of blogs and shops that push forth a global vision of fashion-informed aesthetics. Loosely associated with some form of creative output, they attend art parties, take lo-fi pictures with analog cameras, ride their bikes to night clubs and sweat it up at nouveau disco-coke parties. The hipster tends to religiously blog about their daily exploits, usually while leafing through generation-defining magazines like Vice, Another Magazine and Wallpaper. This cursory and stylized lifestyle has made the hipster almost universally loathed. b, 21b, 21h, 21

b, 21b, 21This is important because where previous counter cultures at least pretended to have some substance , hipsters have none. They are a subculture entirely based on image and consumption. They are the grand victory of marketing firms who have been able to flip and package every social movement of the post WWII era.

b, 21b, 21Actually, I can't really think of any I've met in real life that I'd consider hipsters. My neighborhood is crawling with them though. They frequent a bar a block away from my apartment???it's run down dive joint called "The Model". How delightfully ironic.

Because the definition for hipster is soooo broad it can contain almost anyone between 14-40 with any artistic sensibilities that ever drinks and or listens to music. Not a sub-culture.b, 21b, 21I read this camping last night.b, 21(camping is sooo hipster)

Being a hipster isn't as bad as it seems. Could be worse...b, 21b, 21 b, 21b, 21b, 21Being called a hipster is the equivalent of being called a yuppie in the 80's or a corporate sellout in the 90's.

    b, 21b, 21No, it's actually not the same at all.b, 21b, 21In the 80's a hipster was a "poseur" and in the 90's a "scenester"b, 21b, 21Yuppies and corporate sell-outs are completely different social strata.

b, 21b, 21I'm sorry. I never hear of any. As I recall "Poseur" was the term if there was a single person or small group of people that didn't fit in the punk/skate and to a small degree the hip-hop scene. There wasn't clubs all over the city filled with them. They were the ones who were treated as outcast at these places.b, 21b, 21While yuppie clubs were filled all over with young professions with disposable incomes to blow. Using their money to make them "Hip". Buying their clothing, their art, their drugs to make them hip...

I'm not that old, but I remember criticism of counterculture even when it did have some sort of agenda. 50's and the Beats, 60's and the hippies and 70's and disco. b, 21b, 21This is an intersting thread. Thanks for posting it.

Hipsters = ravers of the 90s?

  • Who else will admit to wearing American Apparel?b, 21b, 21Kind of a dumb article, it's the same subcultural posturing and flexing that's been going on since subcultures existed. I've never been much of a fan of Adbusters, though. Maybe it's because I'm an AA-wearing hipster? Nah.
