  • There was that mediocre cover of Get Thy Bearings performed by, I believe, Peanut Butter Wolf etc under the name Sand Dollars. Not horrible, but it came nowhere near the original.

Seems like Donovan was covered quite extensivle by a number of artists.b, 21Was he THAT influential...do you think?b, 21Or was it just synchronicity; ie. recording industry boom + hippie craze + artists looking to do 'hip" covers = many covers.

b, 21b, 21b, 21Between 1965 and the early 70s Donovan had a fair number of sizable hits, in addition to being a kind of standard bearer for the whole hippy thing.

Pandemonium, otherwise knows as "thoughts and words" -kind of a British beat band that later turned into a vaguely Simon + Garfunkle sounding outfit covered season of the witch before Donovan's version was released. Apparently their manager had good contacts

b, 21b, 21I really liked Donovan. At times I still do. b, 21b, 21He is not the artist or songwriter that Lennon/McCartney/Dylan/Mitchell/Simon are/were.b, 21b, 21I would say his lyrics do not hold up that well. b, 21b, 21I'd say, high quality hippie folk fluff.

b, 21b, 21b, 21I think you're underestimating him. His very early stuff on Hickory is pretty much straight up Dylan-lite, but his Epic stuff is way ahead of the curve mixing jazz, world music, folk and psychedelia.

b, 21b, 21True, he did stretch out, but that also led him to, at times, delve into that dark little corner of the hippie world known as "unicorn folk".

  • The Open Road LP is killer.
