The Roots retiring from touring.

b, 21b, 21b, 21Last night in Chicago The Roots announced that they will be retiring from touring EFFECTIVE March 2009. The move is being made to accommodate their new Night Gig as the house band for Jimmy Fallon when he replaces Conan O???Brien as the host of Late Night in March of 2009. Conan will be moved to the Tonight Show.b, 21b, 21b, 21This kinda sucks. These dudes have a very strong and super enegetic stage show. (I know some of you dudes will probably hate on their homage/tributes/covers of classics, but you can't deny their work ethic (constantly touring) and their stamina (*PASUE*).

    The reason is kinda hilarious though. I can only imagine they'll still be doing the show 30 years from now, and Quest will be the Doc Severensen of our time.

    does anyone remember jay leno trying to get all urban w/ branford marsalis leading the band? and everytime he told an oj joke or a friendly black joke the band would revolt and fake laugh him down?

    b, 21b, 21I've seen them a bunch of times down the years and never been less than comprehensively entertained. Their records aren't always great and they can get a teeny bit self-indulgent on occasion, but I like 'em.

    b, 21b, 21Seriously, I would think a regular schedule for a year or more would be worth it's weight in gold, especially if you are looking to do more outside production, special events,etc. It's kind of like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for musicians like this. One does wonder what role Black Thought would play in a nightly talk show though.

    I haven't really read any details, but i am guessing Black Thought will not be there all the time. There have been other things "backed by the Roots" that didn't feature Black Thought. I am assuming it just means the band, but who knows. b, 21b, 21the dude from mighty might bosstones is jimmy kimmel's announcer, so maybe black thought will be the announcer.

    I'm guessing this will also give Questlove much more time to work on production, which always seemed like his main passion. He's probably going to helm the neo-neo-soul revival of 2010.
