Drummer for Jimi Hendrix found deadb, 21b, 21By MARY HUDETZ, Associated Press Writerb, 21b, 21PORTLAND, Ore. ??? Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.b, 21Mitchell was a powerful force on "Are You Experienced?" the 1967 debut album of the Hendrix band. He had an explosive drumming style that can be heard in hard-charging songs such as "Fire" and "Manic Depression."b, 21The Englishman had been drumming for the Experience Hendrix Tour, which performed Friday in Portland. It was the last stop on the West Coast part of the tour.b, 21Hendrix died in 1970. Noel Redding, bass player for the trio, died in 2003.b, 21An employee at Portland's Benson Hotel called police after discovering Mitchell's body.b, 21Erin Patrick, a deputy medical examiner, said Mitchell apparently died of natural causes. An autopsy was planned.b, 21Bob Merlis, a spokesman for the tour, said Mitchell had stayed in Portland for a four-day vacation and planned to leave Wednesday.b, 21"It was a devastating surprise," Merlis said. "Nobody drummed like he did."b, 21He said he saw Mitchell perform two weeks ago in Los Angeles, and the drummer appeared to be healthy and upbeat.b, 21Merlis said the tour was designed to bring together veteran musicians who had known Hendrix ??? like Mitchell ??? and younger artists, such as Grammy-nominated winner Jonny Lang, who have been influenced by him.b, 21Mitchell was a one-of-a-kind drummer whose "jazz-tinged" style was a vital part of both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Experience Hendrix Tour that ended last week, Merlis said. "If Jimi Hendrix were still alive," Merlis said, "he would have acknowledged that."b, 21Mitchell played for numerous other bands but was best known for his work in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, which was inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 1992.b, 21According to the Hall of Fame, he was born July 9, 1947, in Ealing, England.b, 21Hendrix, Redding and Mitchell held their first rehearsal in October 1966, according to the Hall of Fame's Web site.b, 21In an interview last month with the Boston Herald, Mitchell said he met Hendrix "in this sleazy little club."b, 21"We did some Chuck Berry and took it from there," Mitchell told the newspaper. "I suppose it worked."

RIP to a talent who often got overlooked when discussing important rock drummers. He was also the drummer on a few of those early Georgie Fame sides too. 61 is too young.

I always enjoyed his drumming on 1983 A Merman.....b, 21b, 21He made me think i was going deeper underwater....

  • Not to be morbid, but at this time the Jimi Hendrix Experience is the only post-1960's group I can think of where all the members are deceased...b, 21b, 21(I'm not counting the Temptations or the Ramones...there's an original member still alive from both groups who can tell the story...)

    At one time I thought I didn't like Mitchell's drumming. b, 21Too noisy.b, 21Then I realized I liked ever track he ever played on.b, 21b, 21His drumming will live on forever.

  • What Mitch Mitchell did was an art.b, 21b, 21If you've ever had to share a stage with an overanxious drummer who kept playing all bombastic at the wrong times, then you can appreciate Mitchell. He was pretty explosive on the drum kit, but he went off when he was supposed to. He always knew enough to reel it back in. Too many drummers never got the "reel it back in" part. b, 21b, 21Right now I'm thinking of his fills in "Manic Depression" and how on the money they were...

  • Mitch Mitchell was the drummer Hendrix needed. The only one who could stand out behind Hendrix's firery guitar playing.b, 21b, 21We will sorely miss him.
