Jesus, I agree completely with Eli.

  • Race might be an issue in this election (hopefully not) but I had a thought today that it seems to be more about generational change. We've had the old white guys driving the car for too long. We're lost in the wilderness, running on empty, the car's falling apart. It's time to bring the young smart guy/gals with fresh ideas into the driver's seat. Who cares if they're black, white, latino, asian, whatever?? Dad needs to hand over the keys and steering wheel. It's time for a positive CHANGE dammit.

In fact I take issue with the whole mentality that we should trust some giant state and a giant government to solve our problems. Power corrupts. Our government is responsible scores of totally reprehensible atrocities committed in the name of the American people. I have a deep respect for anyone who is committed to living outside the system for this reason, and does not want to participate in this election, or any election.b,121b,121If you are going to participate, and you're thinking of voting for McCain, then you're either ignorant or an asshole.

If someone votes for a candidate simply based on race, it does not make them a racist, but that act in itself is racial discrimination. And if McCain becomes a victim of racial discrimination in the general election of the United States, it will be the most beautiful irony ever.b, 21b, 21But like Jonny said, that's a vast oversimplification and the logic that presumes that such a decision is being made on the part of the voter is inherently flawed.

font class="post"1b,121b,121One of the basic tenets of Rock A Logic is that issues should be debated without context. b, 21b, 21Racism: "The notion that one's own ethic stock is superior." American Heritage Dictionary or the English Language. (desk copy)b,121b,121If you are white and are voting for Obama just because he is Black by definition you are not racist, by definition. b,121b,121If you are Black and you are voting for Obama because he is Black that does not mean you are racist. It could mean that you believe that you believe that our nation would benefit from having a Black president based on history, the need for positive Black role models or because you think we need more balance between Black and white in government. None of those reasons would be racist. But they would give the vote context. b, 21b, 21The idea that liberals or people on this board would have a hard time voting against a Black person is ridiculous. There is no love for Condi Rice, Michael Steele or Alan Keys here.

b,121Well I've done my own, non-Jewish schlepp, and just spent the best part of $40 on the phone trying to convince my dad to vote for Obama. My dad would vote for Clinton, or Gore, but suddenly his Democratic leanings have left him (or 'righted' him). It's not that he likes McCain, he knows McCain would probably result in an indefinite period of occupation in the middle east, and as a vietnam vet he sees it as the same sh*t, different decade, and feels McCain also sees it the same way, but as some misguided chance to purge a stain on America's (and McCain's) military record... but he can't 'trust' Obama.b,121 I've tried telling my dad to forget the years he spent growing up in Mississippi, Obama doesn't resent you, even if life in the south was/is an us & them, black & white world...b,121my dad's main concerns are about the economy. So I tried telling him that as the world/b1 economy is all inter-linked, while Obama would bring about consumer confidence, McCain would puncture any lingering hopes.b,121I tried all sorts of things, I'm not saying he didn't listen, but his silence on why/b1 he doesn't feel empathy with Obama speaks volumes, and I'm left wondering what else I can say. Any body have any good, realistic ideas?

It is EXTRAORDINARILY racist and insulting to continually hold up this idea that black people are only voting for Obama because he is black, and bring it up everytime a black person expresses some kind of enthusiasm over the possibility of having a black president. Truly some shameful sh*t that discounts the idea that black people vote based on the issues.
