I grew up in New Mexico where Texan tourists are like a plague. Every time I hear the word "Texan" I picture a fat white lady with bleach blonde hair and a metallic cowboy hat asking me where she can find the EL-DORRA-DOO hotel, to which I replied "I think you mean the Eldorado, it's right down that street" (true story)

  • ha!b,121the memories i have of visiting northern NM where me asking some dudes questions in spanish only to have them upsetting-ly tell me they're not mexican, they're native american and they dont speak spanish

I always liked the expression "You can tell a Texan, but you can't tell him much."

Hmmmm....b,121b,121"Don't mess with Texas" is a slogan used to curtail the illegal disposal of garbage.b,121b,121A not so clever play on words.b,121b,121Nothing arrogant or mean spirited about it in the least.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Really? I haven't covered that much of the universe, but I'm not sure that's the most widely held perception of Texans. I mean, I don't think Texans are thought of as unfriendly, exactly, just that most folks think of Texans as a)outlandish, b)cowboys, or c)both.

I used to spend summers in Woodlands from like 10-13. Then like 5 years later I saw Beevis and Butthead and I completely got it. Especially the Todd character. That cartoon is Woodlands to a T.

I may not be your typical "proud" Texan but I certainly apperciate living here.b,121b,121I can afford a home and lifestyle here that I quite frankly couldn't afford in places like California or my native New York.b,121b,121I have been able to provide an education for my kids without having to get them into student loan debt, again, something I could not do as easily elsewhere.b,121b,121The state itself is beautiful and has a wide range of geography similar to California. b,121b,121The idea that "everything's bigger in Texas" did not originate in Texas but rather by visitors from other areas and has become a stereotype. I guess some would say a negative stereotype.b,121b,121Even the 60's song "Long Tall Texan" was based on an outsiders stereotype of what the state represents.b,121b,121Three of the 6 fastest growing cities in the U.S. are in Texas so there must be some attraction.b,121b,121The fact that the population of the state has nearly doubled in the last 40 years has lead some native Texans to display some pride as to what it was like before people from around the U.S. moved here in mass......sorta like a preservation and pride of their culture that is surely changing/has changed.b,121b,121What I can't understand is all the Texas hate......I mean really, hating on a geographic location and all it's citizens sounds to me like some bigoted BS.b,121b,121I also understand that jealousy is often a big component of hate.b,121b,121Don't start none, won't be none.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I dunno. My skin still crawls and my nerves get all tense whenever I'm there. I have to go there again for xmas and I dread it. As long as I'm out in the country with minimal interaction with people then I'm fine, but as soon as I have to interact with them I get really tensed up and irritated. I mean, I could offer up the old "of course there are some cool texans, and I don't hate all them blah blah blah" but whats the point. Its like saying "I have some black friends, but..." My best man was born and raised in Texas. He doesn't get why I hate it either. b,121b,121b,121But you talk to be people that have been there and you will get the sense that I'm not the only one that feels that way. A lot of people that have been to Texas get that weird "what the hell is wrong with these people?" feeling. Its like there is something in the water that brainwashes them or something (no harvey).b,121b,121Here's the thing... if I made a t-shirt that says ""Liberal" is not an insult" and wore it around town here I'd probably get 1 dirty look and maybe a high five or something. In texas I would fear for my life.
