    It's got breaks yo.b,121b,121Not really a fan of the swinging sixties sound so can't really comment whether it's a good representation of that kind of music or not. I think it's the one with a cover of the Batman theme if that helps sway you.

    One of those Sandy Nelson records has a back-cover shot of him lamping dockside with your girl Jenny Jones.b,121b,121Back in my Breaks, Yo days, I think the only record that disappointed me more than a Sandy Nelson record (on the potential vs. reality front) was that Gadd Gang record.b,121b,121Nelson's use of in-studio revellers/hypemen was pretty tight, though. A lot of his records feel kinda wild, even when there's not shit going on. He's like the (very) white Gary "U.S." Bonds.

    font class="post"1b,121b,121That's a somewhat gully way to put it, but pretty accurate, actually. It's all his mans'n'nem on some "Yeah! Yeah! You're rockin', Sandy! Swing it!" b,121b,121On some high-school band trip to New Orleans, these two guys I knew managed to connive a couple of girls into playing strip poker. After the girls got creeped out, folded early, and left the room, the guys--missing the point entirely--kept playing cards. I get the same kind of vibe from Sandy Nelson records.

    The drums on some of those records bang hard, even if the patterns are more "swinging 60s" then "Braeks, yo". But if you are in to that sort of thing (I am) some of the records are pretty hot.

    font class="post"1b,121b,121I'm "into that sort of thing" myself, and while I've liked Sandy's singles (like "Teen Beat" and "Let There Be Drums") the one album I have (Sandy Nelson Plays Teen Beat) is disappointing. It doesn't help that the version of "Teen Beat" is a remake (pretty identical, but if you're used to the Original Sound single, as I am, then this Imperial recut is a letdown).

    Most of his 60s LPs have some good tracks on them. Especially the one's themed around the "latest" dance craze or whatever eg. Sandy Nelson Shing-a-lings A-Go-Go Boogaloo etc. Good soul covers etc. As mentioned "In Beat" & "Soul Drums" are pretty cool. Also don't sleep on "Boogaloo Beat", "Drums A-Go-Go" & "Beat That #!!@*** Drum". These are all cool LPs. You just don't really want to mess with the earlier "Teen Beat"/"Let There Be Drums" stuff unless you're more into tepid surf sounds. Those mid/late 60s soul/beat ones are where it's at.

    Some of his drums are chopable not loopable IMO, and he does a few sus tunes...but I really dig his cover of InnaGaddaDavidda (however you spell it)---- off the 1975 : Bang Bang Rhythm LP b,121b,121b,121Read this on Wikipedia...dude gets props for it IMOb,121"Near the end of 1963, Nelson was in a motorcycle accident. The injuries necessitated amputation of his right foot and part of that leg. Nonetheless, Nelson continued to record into the early 1970s, releasing 2 or 3 albums a year, mainly cover versions of popular hits plus a few original compositions."

    Bang bang rythem is the best one Ive got of his (as far as the songs and groove), teen beat and co got some alrite stuff... Im keen to check the soul drums one and I seen a few other listed on the net where he does covers of funk/soul tunes, which should have some.b,121b,121which ones you got? (or you keeping it hush hush?)

For me, personally, I think the Ventures' records started to go downhill around '65, when they started doing more instrumental versions of vocal tunes (and fewer originals). I always figured that the same thing went for Sandy Nelson.

That sort of immediate "pre-surf explosion" of probably the tail end of classic rock & roll instros. *not using tepid in a negative way.b,121b,121/font1

    font class="post"1b,121You'd probably dig "Beat That #$@&* Drum", sort of Sandy Nelson trying his hand at garagey type stuff. Nice organ, fuzzy guitar & good choice of covers with tight drums. Just don't get it confused with the earlier plain old "Beat That Drum" which is much less remarkable. They should be pretty cheap to find so no harm in taking a chance if you see one.

    font class="post"1b,121bro you need Boogaloo Beat, it's one of the better ones. I haven't heard "Rebirth Of The Beat" though either, it looks like it's good too though.
