McCain is supposed to be the one setting the tone for his campaign. For the past week at least, the tone has gotten increasing feverish and a little wild. McCain is supposed to be the "steady hand at the tiller" and it's pretty clear he's not. His leadership would be a nightmare for the markets and in time of crisis. Shit could be going up and down and all around and McCain would be grasping for something -- anything -- to hold on to, but he doesn't know what to do.

I saw an interview with a former high-ranking Reagan admin that said that William F. Buckley and Reagan had to kick fringe members like that out of their campaign. And she was talking about Sarah Palin directly. That's why McCain awkwardly corrected the woman who addressed Obama as "an arab."
