    I listen to most everything all the way through. b,121b,121I am old. b,121b,121What separated serious music fans from teeny boppers when I was young was TB listened to 45s and SMF listened to lps. I had a friend who would get mad if you didn't listen to an lp all the way through starting with side one and ending side two. b,121b,121So yeah, I listen to Papa Was A Rolling Stone all the way through and much prefer hearing it that way than just hearing the snippets that have been sampled. b,121b,121The only time I listen to riders on the storm is when it is playing in a store. b,121b,121ROTS has to be one of the Doors worse songs. I don't think they put any thought into music. That first Doors lp is cool, but the good songs were few and far between after that. That's why when I was young most of my friends didn't own those lps, because we didn't want to hear them all the way through.

    the song is a story, yes, the lyrics, but really, from the first note to the last. it is definitely one of those radio songs that if I come into it in the middle, it's disappointing. b,121some long songs, you turn off before it's over or skip the long intro and you feel like you still got a full/satisfying experience (imo the ending of the LP version of Larry Young's Turn Off The Lights are the crumbs after the cake is done vs the 45). not with this song.

    font class="post"1b,121b,121I grew up w/ listnening to the whole song but when the sample era came about my boys and I would jump around to find the break or later just find a certain part that was loopable. That was a bad habit for a quick minute. But certain songs like Papa were never ignored. Later on after that phase gets finished one realizes that the entire joint should be absorbed and then if you wanted to extract a certain part u could, but eating the entire meal was necessary.b,121b,121If im at home and I plan on playing Get Ready by Rare Earth, I'm already in the mindstate that i wanna hear the whole joint. There are times when im at my turntable that I just wanna hear the first verse of a song and ill do that, but my old ass is part of the generation that doesnt have A.D.D. naturally. I prefer to hear a track by the way the artist presented it. b,121b,121As a DJ there are plenty of times where snippets are just the right dosage for rockin a party. And I have no problem going there. Its all context. Shit some of those great Classic long players have their best moments in the latter part of the record. The last part of Issac Hayes's Walk On By/Bar-Kays jammin the hell out is what im waitin for. Issac's vocals for me is just the damn appetizer.

Not because there is some rule about listening to whole songs.b,121b,121When I met sample diggers and started listening to mix tapes I found the idea of just listening to the good songs and the good parts very liberating. In fact some records, like say Ocean PYHITH should not be listened to past the break.

    Hell yes.b,121b,121I used to do a regular 8-until-midnight session at this bar in North London a few years ago, and almost every week for about six months, I'd play "Papa..." from end-to-end as my first record of the evening. This was partly to give me some time to enjoy a beer and get the evening's records in order before the place got super-busy, but also because it's rare that you'll get the opportunity to play a song like that in its entirety in most clubs or bars, and it's nice to hear it good and loud over a decent system once in a while.
