Interesting column by conservative columnist David Brooks:b,121a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/10/opinion/10brooks.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin" target="_blank"1http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/10/opinion/10brooks.html?_r=1&hp&oref=sloginb,121b,121"The Republicans have alienated whole professions. Lawyers now donate to the Democratic Party over the Republican Party at 4-to-1 rates. With doctors, it???s 2-to-1. With tech executives, it???s 5-to-1. With investment bankers, it???s 2-to-1. It took talent for Republicans to lose the banking community."b,121b,121"politically, the G.O.P. is squeezed at both ends. font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121It's apparently a matter of priorities. At least they have the insane yahoo vote all wrapped up.

  • brooks forgot to mention that the gop's pitch to middle america is a huge farce. nobody gets hurt worse under a republican administration than the middle class...except for the poor.

I was genuinely surprised to learn that amongst professionals, there's been such a dramatic swing to the Democratic party.

font class="post"1b,121b,121The Brooks piece (and the public speech that precipitated it, in which he likened Sarah Palin to a "cancer" on the traditional GOP ideals) is very interesting to me. Brooks and Christopher Buckley (who has recently endorsed Senator Obama) seem to be leading a re-emergence of the intellectual base of their Republican Party - a welcome resurgence for a party that has invested heavily and cynically among the least-educated and most reactive Americans.b,121b,121It's always interesting to me to see how a demographical shift among Americans is precipitated by intent. The Republicans, in past years, have (effectively) emotionally gerrymandered the country by duncifying their message and cornering the market on Patriotism. As a former Conservative voter, I became angry when the GOP became more interested in hot-button, low-brain issues and turned their back on their core principles of less Government power and a strict adherence to the Constitution. Granted, I'd have shifted my worldview either way - how could I [i]not/i1 have during the last 8 years? - but even as a young child, I never resonated with the nascent Republican assertions that institutions like public schools and public television were tanamount to Socialism. Why should Americans settle for knee-jerk politics and Luddite policies? Why not elect an elite man or woman to the most important office in the free world? Why [i]not/i1 strive to be the best? Why impugn the good names of scientists that save lives and make our world a better place?b,121b,121Here's hoping for a return to a national, intellectual discourse, irrespective of party loyalties.

font class="post"1b,121b,121And evidently I DOUBLE-FAIL by missing that you already posted the link to the Christopher Buckley article a couple of post up. Sigh.b,121b,121Luck, as for your post. I am less concerned what form the conservative movement takes in the the long term than what the progressive/liberals that are ascending to power do with that power in the short.b,121b,121Basically the left and right are starting to match up their respective echo chambers, blasting out each others ideology and pushing on the "MSM" to report on what they are blathering about. Its not at equilibrium yet, but it is getting closer.b,121b,121Its going to be difficult for either party to have a rational conversation internally, let alone with each other while the likes of Rush and Randy Rhodes screaming. b,121b,121Its going to take some serious under the radar think tanking and reflection followed by a maturation of the partisan media before you are going to see a sane discussion in public.b,121b,121The wildcard is whether Obama will be able to keep the fractious Democrats on target and reach across to the remaining Republicans to address the current economic crisis. If he can establish a steady hand and can get stuff done we might mitigate our coming recession.b,121b,121Beyond that, things are too uncertain to speculate on what will come.
