One of my favorite post-Peanuts strips I discovered as a teen. Sad that Breathed stopped doing it; sad to hear he's about to dead "Opus."/a1b,121b,121img src=http://www.angelfire.com/vamp/shoopshoop/bloomgang2.jpg1

Bloom County is basically comic perfection. Calvin & Hobbes, too.

  • the books were a consistent Xmas gift until I was 16 or so...loved 'em

Dare I say, as topical yet much funnier than "Doonesbury."

Also, Breathed's a href="http://www.avclub.com/content/node/22539" target="_blank"1interview with The Onion AV Club/a1 is the stuff of legends.

font class="post"1b,121b,121As a young youth I was completely immersed in this shit. I feel like I owe so much of my sense of humor and cynical world view to this strip. To this day, I crack these books open and get lost in them. Way, waaaay better than Doonesbury. I actually post on Soulstrut from a Bannana 6000 Computer. b,121b,121b,121 img src="http://www-i5.informatik.rwth-aachen.de/mbp/bloom/bloom_add.gif"1

It is interesting to think about Breathed, Watterson and Larson all retiring so close to one another. With the exception of "Boondocks" - which, in my opinion, had a far shorter "good" era in it, it's been a rather barren landscape since, no ?

Wow, just notice that dude in the wheelchair is rocking Clark Wallabees.

  • I used to love Bloom County! I was very sad when it stopped.

This reminds me, I'm pretty sure BB has an exhibit going on somewhere soon. He has a children's book signing at the Schultz Museum on the 18th, but I thought he had something else going on. Hmmmm.

I have copies of Loose Tails, Billy and the Boingers Bootleg, Takes Too Ticklish To Tell, and The Night of the Mary Kay Commandos. Unfortunately, the Austin American-Statesman never syndicated the Opus comic so I haven't read it at all.

Love for days. Far Side. Calvin and Hobbes. Shaped my young existence much to the chagrin of my peers.

font class="post"1b,121b,121You're not missing much. i1Opus[/i] and that other strip that Berke Breathed had post-i1BC[/i] were good for a few chuckles, but all the magic was gone.

  • I grew up loving Bloom County and I guess that's why I was so disappointed with Outland and Opus since they just rehashed the same jokes over and over. He should have stayed retired.

  • My first exposure to politics. I really was into it as a kid, even before I could fully understand all the Reagan jokes.

font class="post"1b,121b,121In all fairness, they were never meant to be the same strip. I agree - they're inferior compared to "Bloom County" but a weekly, Sunday "strip" (often times just a single box image) is a very different animal. You can't create a storyline or even really build a cast of characters.

font class="post"1b,121b,121But when several ex-i1Bloom County[/i] characters started turning up one by one in i1Outland[/i] and especially i1Opus[/i], you couldn't really help but compare. I was not expecting it to be 1987 all over again when Opus returned to B.C., but everytime I see the newer strip, I keep thinking: something's i1gone[/i]. Maybe if Breathed had just plain started all over with a new cast, I wouldn't be passing judgement...

font class="post"1b,121b,121I hear you. Like I said, I agree that Outland and Opus have been inferior but for me, even if a few characters carried over, the difference in format made a huge difference to the style and impact of the new strips.

It takes a satirical mind to deal with the modern world. The whole thing is such a strange and messy affair.b,121b,121img src="http://images.salon.com/ent/feature/2007/06/08/sopranos/story.jpg"1
