b,121 The best Woody Woodpeckers were the real early ones where his beak was longer, his facial expression was way more psychotic, and he talked like he was reading off a cue card.

b,121No doubt.

b,121The earlier ones still have that pencil-line quality and fluidity as well.
b,121And if i remember correctly his signature - "haw-haw-haw-haw-haw" was looser.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Woody was really the only quality character in the Lantz/Universal stable, to me. After you get him out of the way, the only good folks they had were bit-part-players like Wally Walrus and (ESPECIALLY) Smedley. The other Lantz leads were way too cuddly and Smurfy and forgettable, like Chilly Willy and Andy Panda. And even then, it seemed like Universal was trying to take Woody into that same cutesy, for-chillun-only territory.
b,121Its funny 'cause, as kids we viewed WarnerBros as Disney compared to the Universal/Woody&Friends.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Not me. The Universal crew made me giggle, but there was way too much of a cutie-pie Andy Panda thing going on. Warners was the one setting the pace as far as talking animals went.

Jay Ward!b,121b,121 img src="http://www.celfcentered.com/images/JAY_WARD_thumb.jpg"1 b,121b,121Actually, I'd say Warners wins based upon humor and gags, although the Disney definitely wins the art contest. Jay Ward wins for me based upon writing and voice acting. With all due respect to Mel Blanc, it's hard to beat Paul Frees, William Conrad, June Foray, and Edward Everett Horton.

b,121To me, watching a Disney cartoon is like listening to a Les Paul record.

b,121You respect the technological innovations, but how often would you want to watch/listen to it?

font class="post"1b,121b,121Most definitely. Paul Frees' Ape named Ape is easily in my top 5 cartoon voices of all time. Dudley Do-Right came after George of the Jungle, but they are the last Jay Ward productions I know of.b,121b,121Back in the days before video iPods, I used to make cassette tapes of the audio from Bullwinkle and George of the Jungle episodes to just listen to while out and about.b,121b,121i1When you find youself in danger, b,121When you're threatened by a stranger, b,121When it looks like you will take a lickin', b,121There is someone waiting, b,121Who will hurry up and rescue you, b,121Just Call for Super Chicken! /i1
