  • Thanks for the schoolin'. The first version by the Johnson's live is jammin, but Shuggie's song/rendition is way more real... inspired ... the man can write a tune.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Its his song but they got radio play w/ it. Which is a testament to his talent.b,121b,121Can any OGs tell us whether Shuggie's version was a 45 single or played on the radio? Rock or Pick33?

I always preferred the Shuggie original - felt less overblown and much more personal and genuine. However that's not to say that the Brothers Johnson version isn't a great song in it's own right.b,121b,121Just wanted to put in my two cents, I have absolutely no idea about whether it was released as a single though I've never seen a 45 of it anywhere even on the interweb.

Always, [i]always/i1 loved the Brothers Johnson version of this. Never heard the o.g. until many years later, and it's great, but for me the Brothers Johnson take has a kind of "that summer and that girl" weight that Shuggie's version can never have.b,121b,121Anyone familiar with the soul/reggae version by Bunny Brown which came out in the UK around '79/'80 on Groove Records (as in the old record store on Dean St.)? Vocal is a touch overwrought, but the groove is nice.
