Good question. I hadn't seen the "Music City" pressing until that recent batch appeared.

Word - I agree, that's weird. You thinking bootleg? b,121b,121Paging Jinx! (If he's not too busy with baby).

  • b,121There's simply two pressings of the record, both from the around the same time.b,121I believe the white one is the first.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Dante - I think the question (if I understand it correctly) isn't over the colors of the label, but rather, what's up with the "Didn't I" 45s pressed on labels that read "Music City" sans "Records."

What I don't get though - if you're going to bootleg it, why not bootleg it? Changing the label makes little sense. So maybe it is legit...

  • The New Batch that has surfaced are straight from an Auction of Ray Dobards estate.Ray Dobard owned Music City and these are Legit.

font class="post"1b,121b,121OK this does change my opinion slightly, still think the label is strange though.. Looking for an upgrade of my own copy but it will not be one those..b,121b,121Cheers

  • there is NM stock out (I have one or two left) from the distributor in Oakland that pressed the record. As Veltri detailed above.b,121b,121I mean, you can think what you like, but you're wrong. These are 100% legit and anyone with any knowledge of the Bay Area soul scene can verify it.

  • Also this record was printed several times because it was a successful regional record... hence different label designs. Regular shit.

  • Because, you know, we can do that.

  • what about the green label?

  • Also legit.b,121b,121Not sure which came first, they were all contemporary of one another.

actually there are three presses of the white label with red writing. b,121b,121img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/justin74/Dorando45s.jpg"1b,121b,121im guess the green ones either were first or something ray tried to re-sell the record cause it wasnt doing well at first. i think the green was an early run to see what it would do, the first white one without dobards name circulated around the bay, la, and other stations around the country that dobard hit off (hed been in the game 20+years before Darondo came out). after receiving some play and getting some notice he stamped his name on them and sent them out on the larger lettered Music City 45s. b,121b,121now i guess he reused some of the same stock labels he had for the two things in one 45 (which he did often for his black labeled ones and i was told this by rico and dennis leonis) for a later run of Didnt I cause maybe there was still demand or dobard just wanted to.b,121b,121anyway... im not sure and theres no one i can think of who would know for sure at this point. just a guess.

  • jinx74jinx74 2,287 Posts
or maybe the green ones came later cause he still had the green gospel music city labels... i really dont know. if someone knows more id like to know as well.

  • Let me ask a question I've often been curious about. When a record does well locally or regionally, there was sometimes a push for it to go national, either by having a bigger label pick it up or simply pressing up more.b,121b,121I've read stories about how some record distributors would simply press up their own copies so that they could profit from the "success" of a song, and that was that. Sometimes it would look the same, other times it would have a different label variations. This is something I guess doo-wop collectors deal with on a regular basis, wanting an original vs. a repress vs. a counterfeit copy, or seeing a 45 of song when only a legitimate 78 had existed before.b,121b,121As more people get into collecting soul and funk, not only as a hobby but as something they can profit from, does that issue become more important?

font class="post"1b,121b,121You always want the issue closest to the source. Often times a semi-hit record will be pressed simultaneously in two different cities (say at Sheldon in Chicago and Monarch in Los Angeles) and have completely different materials, printing and fonts. This was done in an effort to expedite the record hitting the streets, to save on cross-country shipping costs, and ultimately sell more copies. Depending on the plant, a record will always be styrene (eg. Monarch) or nearly always vinyl (eg. Sheldon). The Darondo record in question looks like it was manufactured by two different plants during its lifetime, both on the West Coast for obvious reasons.
