  • I reps da san madeo, hoard. I finally went after all these years. It's good but not as "ZOMG!" as people hype it up to be.b,121b,121Ichiban Kan is1in downtown San Mateo on third, pretty cool. Go to the back for the wild and assorted selection of Poky.

  • Citrus Club. I would say the food is on the bland side. I've never had anything there that won me over. I used to eat there a bunch when I worked at Amoeba. It's not bad, but not one of my favorites. I wouldn't even think of it as a ramen spot though.

Unless something has changed in the last two years, there is no good ramen in S.F. Nowhere in the city.

font class="post"1b,121b,121It's a lot harder to execute a good noodles in broth than you're assuming. Peking Duck? It's duck dude. You could spread duck meat on a cracker and it'd taste good. You can't just pour broth in a bowl of noodles and make magic. b,121b,121Riding for a place like Citrus Club is like riding for a Vegas buffet. I don't doubt you can have a "good meal" in either place, but it wouldn't be the first place I'd recommend to anyone asking about a specific dish (such as ramen).

font class="post"1b,121b,121Admittedly I'm not a ramen expert, but saying that noodles in broth is more complicated than duck pate is kinda like saying building with Legos is more complicated that constructing a highrise.

You were the one to throw down the "Peking Duck" card though. b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/emil.gif" alt="" /1b,121b,121(joking!)b,121b,121In all seriousness, even something as seemingly simple as noodle soup takes a lot of effort to execute really well. I can get "passable" Peking Duck in almost any Chinese restaurant in Cali but I don't have any illusions that shit will be done as well as, say, Koi Palace in Daly City. b,121b,121Ramen especially: the kind of refinement it takes to really execute well on it isn't easy (hence why there's no great ramen in S.F.). The difference between, say, the ramen at Santouka in Los Angeles vs. the ramen at Citrus Club (or one of those many pan-Asian noodle spots) is vast when compared side to side. I was assuming the original poster wanted something really good rather than "good enough."

font class="post"1b,121b,121I have a long-running debate with a homie of mine about which of these is worse. they both suck so bad its hard to decide.

  • The difference between average ramen and great ramen is huge too.

  • Genki Ramen on 3944 Geary Blvd is my favorite ramen place in SF and, in my opinion, compares favorably to Santa Ramen in San Mateo. Lunch portions are very generous. If you're in SF, it beats having to make the drive south.

font class="post"1b,121b,121In terms of the noodles themselves, what is the specific hallmark of great ramen? I assume that the quality of a noodle resides mostly in its texture, since the ingredients for noodles/pasta cannot really deliver that much flavor.
