I thought they weren't doing hardware? I haven't really kept up, but last I heard it was just going to be software that integrates into any existing smart phone.

font class="post"1b,121b,121They aren't doing hardware--this is just the first phone that will run Google's Android mobile OS. I'm actually editing a big-ass article about this phone right now.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah, it's manufactured by HTC, and it's locked to the T-Mobile network (sorta like how the iPhone is locked to AT&T).

font class="post"1b,121b,121I'm pretty sure that's the same manufacturer that did Tmobile's Dash, which is pretty solid (aside from the fragile lcd).

  • I have made it publicly known in the mobile industry at various conferences that if someone launched a phone running Android in 2008, I would eat my hat. What I didn't say is that I would make that hat out of fruit roll-ups so it's all good. Guess it might be time to hit up Safeway... it's not out yet, though!

Aligning software vendors, device manufacturers and carriers on a mobile Linux initiative will help solve the time to market issues for devices and fragmentation issues for application developers. It will take time, though, because there are of course still competitive agendas among all the foundation members and it's just a damn complex thing! Stay tuned img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" 21

  • I didn't get an iPhone because I was waiting for this. Depending on pricing I'll cop when Verizon has it.

Don't know about anyone else, but it's $50 per month on Tmobile.

I tried this out today. Not impressed. The iPhone was intuitive enough that I was immediately able to view my email and do a number of tasks. I had to fumble around with the G1 for a few minutes to figure it out. The onscreen buttons are too small and I was frequently trying to figure how to escape certain apps. The Gmail app was particularly frustrating and the rotating streetview surprisingly useless.b,121b, 21It's a good first step but I still have a year on my Verizon plan.

I have been watching this phone for a while, and they just opened up the os for developers to develop apps, they also just admitted that there is a kill switch built in to take out unapproved apps. img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/weaksauce.gif" alt="" 21

font class="post"1b,121b, 21For the sake of accuracy... and common sense.b,121b, 211.) Developers have been making apps in android since the SDK came out LAST YEAR. I had android built on my Nokia N800 like 4 or 5 months ago, and there were plenty of apps available for it even back then when it wasn't even commercially released on a single device.b,121b, 212.) The ABILITY to Remotely killing apps is a GOOD THING, especially since the Android marketplace is completely open, who knows what the F*ck people are gonna be writing. This should rightly be touted as a security feature. Hell, a huge enterprise selling point of Blackberries is that all data on the device can be wiped remotely. It's called security.

Still no Exchange email support. That will hurt them in the corporate world until a 3rd party releases an app or Google licenses ActiveSync like Apple did.

android i think could be the hotness eventually. But this HTC 2009 era sidekick is a bad look. b,121b,121I like my iphone, but im not gonna tell you that it doesnt have any problems. b,121b,121However this is not the iphone killer yet. I mean, combination mini-usb/headphone jack alone is enough of a turn off for me. b,121b,121b,121Still, looks decent!

The only limitation is the hardware's ability to run Android. b,121b,121I didn't like Android that much when I had it running and I predicted that it would be a let down, but the possibilities for Android overwhelmingly exceed that of mobile OSX. Just give it a while and let other handset makers adopt it and it's over.
