Philly heads...What's up with Scrapple?

I had never seen, heard of, or even imagined this would have a reason to exist until I went to a dingy Philly diner. Someone told me it's just all the scraps of leftover meat pressed together and fried? Is it all as bad as the spot where I went, or is there good and bad scrapple?

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yes. Think of it like this: It's the stuff that wasn't good enough to make it into sausage.

font class="post"1b,121b,121I like it grilled until the outside is really crispy, almost overcooked really. I have not eaten it in a long time though. It is beyond bad for you.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Really? I've lived in Texas 32 years and the only two times I've seen it has been in Philly.b,121b,121Maybe I need to step up my local greasy spoon game, but I thought I was pretty thorough in that department.

From Wikipedia:b,121b,121"Scrapple is a mush of pork scraps and trimmings combined with cornmeal and flour, often buckwheat flour. The mush is formed into a loaf, and slices of the scrapple are then fried before serving. Scraps of meat left over from butchering, too small to be used or sold elsewhere, were made into scrapple to avoid waste. Scrapple is best known as a regional food of Delaware, South Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland."b,121b,121 img src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/23/Plate_of_scrapple.jpg/270px-Plate_of_scrapple.jpg"1

Yeah, that pic looks just like what I had and I damn near had to drown it with hot sauce just to get it down.b,121b,121So, is there quality "gourmet" scrapple? I'm guessing by definition all scrapple is going to be shit, but you never know. I've had effin amazing vegan chili cheese dogs.
