Quote:/font1h,121b,121/font1Quote:/font1h,121b,121b,121I think that it's a comment on the poor state of education in this country (or, generally, the jealousness of those that are under-educated) when an educated man or woman is ever a i1drawback/i1 in an electoral process. b,121b,121h,121
font class="post"1b,121b,121I wholly agree with you though it's not so much the education that's the issue but rather the stereotype that the more educated people become, the more "not of the people" they become. And as noted, I don't think this should be a priority in electing a president but clearly, I'm in the minority on that. b,121b,121h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121Well, education can be an overrated asset when a pure, raw, i1leader/i1 is potentially at hand. And maybe that's what Barack Obama's problem really is; he's not really seen as a i1leader/i1 as much as he's seen as a i1motivator[/i].b,121b,121Related ramblings (feel free to skip these):b,121b,121What most liberals can't stand about Palin is she appears to be unqualified as a leader, and instead passively lets her mere i1presence/i1 perform both tasks in her active stead. But that was precisely Obama's appeal in 2004 - i1i.e./i1 largely symbolic - to most Americans who hadn't followed him closely. Obama, to his credit, has added much substance since. He's had to, because his powerfully implicit and explicit message of Change - let's be realistic - got stale at least half a year ago. If the election had been held seven months ago, he'd have won with the same audacious strength that Palin is pulling now. But the more I view it, there might not be enough time left for Palin's raw i1connect/i1 to dull before the election - especially considering the boost she'll probably get from the VP debate. In the law of conservation of energy, we are told, energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another or transferred from one body to another. It's not a 1:1 metaphor with politics, exactly, but Obama lost a bunch of his mercury and Palin, its unwitting recipient, has had it foisted upon her.b,121b,121This phenomenon might be known to further generations - even if it is not rightfully deserved - as the onset of some Conservative Feminine Awakening. I'll repeat what I've previously noted: the average Democratic voter is mostly (about 54-56% on average) female. The Female Vote is more important for the Democrats than any one minority group (even African-Americans). The Republicans have, for the first time, found a way to directly tap into that demographic (more so than any i1issue/i1 or ballot initiative could ever accomplish), and even if John McCain goes on to lose this election, the average female voter can no longer be an odds-on favorite to side with the Left-Wingers. Signs of this phenomenon coming to fruition will largely be made manifest tangentially. For example, we know what would likely happen to i1Roe/i1. Women have almost single-handedly been keeping i1Roe/i1 alive until now, and it's i1still/i1 on the precipice; it's just one justice and one court case away from reversal.b,121b,121I do believe that since at least 2001 (if not 1980), there has been a decided Right shift for this country - despite recent votes in the Democrats' direction - wherein the policies of folks like Dennis Kucinich are increasingly seen as those of lunatics and the old Lefty Lions in the government are ceding their power without commensurate backers. Toward this end, the Clintons won their wars under the banner of Centrism - to the detriment of the old Democratic ideals. Frankly, though, I suppose that getting attacked in grand fashion by terrorists on one's own soil i1should/i1 serve to achieve a Nationalistic purpose. Hell, I was looking for a "Don't Tread On Me" flag on 9/13/01.b,121b,121All this obvious, divergent crap to say: For most Americans, the sky is dark and the incumbent party, although reviled, is at least i1the devil they know/i1. It's a bit like the old "elephant repellant" ruse; "how much i1worse/i1 would our economy be if the elephant/s1 Obama took over?" will be the GOP question. The ground under the Democratic opposition is admittedly shaky and its party's mode might be a bit too transitional for their "change" theme to fully embraced by the American people. Who needs hope and change when you have familiarity, moxie, and a Mojo Hand? The McCain campaign has successfully played ludicrous ads to a lead in the polls. Republicans are successfully rebranding themselves as "Conservatives." And Sarah Palin, McCain's cynical choice for VP, is not the Presidential type. Certainly not yet, at least. Her education and rank inexperience is not yet an issue, though, because she - truthfully - speaks for mainstream America. Millions of our countrymen and women seem to i1know/i1 her. So far, that apparently matters more to them than the historic and unbelievable events of the past several days on Wall Street. But we'll see how that theme shakes out. My guess is that economic matters will get worse between now and November 4th, or will at least be shaky enough to cast a serious pall over the election. If Obama doesn't win with i1this/i1 wind at his back, either he's an idiot, and/or the country probably ever would have elected him as their President in the first place. Realistically: a Hollywood-style checklist is unveiling itself against the GOP, yet they maintain their lead in polling.b,121b,121I'm actually starting to lose sleep over this.

I'm not trying to sound overly enthused since that's just as bad as chicken littling shit, but man, this shit is CRAZY.b,121b,121"Let's not equivocate too much here. Over the course of the past several days, there has been a rather dramatic shift in this election toward Barack Obama. Our trendline estimate, which is engineered to be fairly conservative, registers the swing as equaling roughly 4 points over the course of the past week.b,121b,121Changes of this velocity are unusual outside of the convention periods and the debates, especially in close elections. b1It took John McCain about 60 days and tens of millions of advertising dollars to whittle Obama's lead down from roughly 5 points at its peak in early June, to the 1-point lead that Obama held heading into the conventions. Obama has swung the numbers that much in barely a week.[/b]"b,121b,121a href="http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/todays-polls-919.html" target="_blank"1http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/todays-polls-919.html/a1

  • someone was telling me that mccain, when the RNC money is factored in to it, has 100mil at his disposal and is thus at a distinct advantage over obama, who doesnt have nearly that amount to spend. this flies in the face of what i thought was a large obama money advantage b,121b,121whats the deal soulstrut?

  • McCain has a lot of money, it's true - but there's all kinds of weird shit that is not being taken into account with that statement. For instance - I was just reading today how apparently Obama has employed a particular voter ID technology that is not beholden to party rules as far as which organizations it can work with, whereas the Republican voter ID technology has certain boundaries information-wise... also, I mean Obama raised 66mil last month alone I don't think 100mil is really going to have him shook.

What are you waiting for. b,121b,121Obama + DNC = McCain + RNC at the end of the day. b,121b,121Obama they say is forced to do a lot of fundraising, while McCain is free to follow Palin around.b,121b,121McCain is attacking Obama for doing so much fundraising. b,121b,121Expect to see this attack from Obama in the final weeks; McCain and RNC have been raising mass amounts of unregulated $$$ in huge amounts from a handfull of lobbiest and Washington insiders. Evil. Meanwhile, Obama has only taken small donation from everyday people per campaign finance rules. Good. b,121b,121Money to National Committees is not regulated.

Quote:/font1h,121b,121(CNN) - Sen. John McCain/b1 has spent much of his two decades in Congress pushing deregulation, but the Republican presidential nominee is continuing his election year migration toward more government control of the economy as the nation faces one of its greatest financial crises since the Great Depression.b,121b,121"I want the people in Ohio here to know that I have not forgotten the economy on Main Street/b1," McCain said during a campaign stop in Strongsville, Ohio, on Tuesday. "Not Wall Street, not Washington, D.C., but Main Street/b1 is the focus of our attention and our efforts."b,121b,121McCain expressed doubts about the bailout during a campaign stop in Media, Pennsylvania, on Monday, in an attempt to help distance himself from the unpopular president.b,121b,121"We need to put our country first and focus what's best for Main Street/b1.
