Had the Group Home "2 Thousand" joint on blast in the whip tonight. The Donald Byrd/Issac Hayes "Feel like loving you..." joint from the Donald Byrd and 125th street album is also my shit. Love a lot of the Blackbyrds joints as well.
Also caught The Blackbyrds over the weekend. Mix was awful, and there was no trumpet, but they still rocked the place with breakneck versions of Dominoes and Rock Creek Park.
1)A New Perspective 2)I'm Tryin' to Get Home 3)Blackjack 4)Fuego 5)Byrd In Hand 6)Places & Spaces 7)Free Form 8)Ethiopian Knights 9)Early Jazz Messengers and other releases on Columbia,Verve,etc.. 10)Byrd in Flight
This is a great example of 'classic' Donald Byrd. I also like his pre-Mizell efforts like 'Fancy Free' and 'Kofi', which combine the long grooves with that subtle deep funk.
I do think 'Places and Spaces' is THE collaborative masterpiece for Dr. Byrd and the Mizells.
As much as I love Byrd's straighter stuff, "Places And Spaces" is my favorite record by him overall. Start to finish just a beautiful piece of work. I wish it had 3 more songs on it. Amazing.
Steppin' Into Tomorrow is my favourite and most listened. The first one I found, listened to it to death. Think Twice and the title track.. gosh.
They're all good but i've listened to Places and Spaces, Street Lady and A New Perspective the most out of the rest. Cristo Redentor is the one to pull out this time of year.
Just copped this record and it reminded me again how good that tune GHANA actually is. Lex Humphries is really working those pots and pans on this one.
Places and Spaces and Fancy Free still rank high as well.
I agree. I love "Wind Parade" and "Dominoes," but I'm going to have stand up and holleur for "Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)." I have a huge party going on in my private mind garden whenever I listen to this song.

WHO GOT THE PLACES AND SPACES LP POSTER FOR ME. I ASK EVERY YEAR FOR IT AND NO HOOKS IT UP.
