you all should be ashamed of yourselves for not considering whether this is technically manslaughter under the new york criminal code.

Truly unbelievable. I am in awe.

Folks are really out of line for discussing this situation like an actual tragedy that happened to real people, and not just another court exercise? In fact, those people are the ones who should be ashamed of themselves?

I don't think that it is we who lack shame.

Until you provide evidence that proves otherwise, the answer is yes.

There is abosulutely no defense for that man being killed.....NONE......and to offer any defense of this verdict indicates you are completly disconnected from the real world.......God forbid your children should ever have to walk around in fear of the people that are supposed "to protect and serve" them .....God forbid a judge should let them be murdered in vain because they weren't "credible"

We've all seen, maybe have been involved in, situations like this. Roll to the club with your crew, drink a few too many brews. Get a little rowdy, maybe start jawing off at another crew, management, or the bouncers. 99.99% of the time, nothing happens and you stumble home. But I guess the equation changes if you're black and in NY.

the truest and saddest things I've read...even more so that it's not just NY

this is what i am saying

we are criticizing a incompetent part of the police force...not all policemen

we are angry that bad practices lead to such tragedies

but even more frightning is the free pass that protects those at fault de facto

both intstutional flaws combined make for a pretty dangerous combination given todays society

hair splitting, trial-by-trial...these events should at least be a HUGE wake-up call to review the current institutionalized negligence that KILLS people

    but nothing will change..yet again...

    where are the facts!

Have any of you read the verdict? It's on NYT in pdf format.

check out this quote (apologies for the format):

It is important to note that in analyzing what happened here, it was necessary to consider the mind-set of each defendant at the time and place of occurrence, and not the mind-set of the victims. What the victims did was more pertinent to
resolving the issues of fact than what may have been in their minds. Also, carelessness and incompetence are not standards to be applied here, unless the conduct rises to the level of criminal acts, as defined by the law relating to each count charged.

    makes me so sad.

Oliver fired 31 shots in the incident, Isnora fired 11, and Cooper fired four times. Cooper fired wildly, with one of his shots even hitting an elevated airport train station

    why not ?

Quite simply because there are some jobs that I would not take for any amount of money and being a NYC cop is one of them.

Yeah, you just want to talk like a cop and then hide behind actual cops as they enforce your overbearing rules of life.

Yeah, I'm real fluent in "cop talk".

Actually, I wouldn't want the responsibility of protecting assholes like you who disrespect all authority and the justice system as a whole.

No cop has ever "protected" me.

Plus, why should "authority" be respected? Simply because it demands it unreasonably?

    Respect is to be earned.

Oliver is the issue - he's the one that reloaded and kept firing and he's also the one that the family said showed no remorse at all.

The other two officers were following orders.
