  • Took a quick road trip out to Western MA for a record
show this morning ... free to get in, but gas & tolls = $35 :x
Anyway, found a few decent things, and everything was cheap:

The soul stuff came from a guy who showed up late, touchy on
condition but all $2-$3. Bought the Caetano from Thurston Moore,
who had a lot of good jazz records and very decent prices.

I was at that same Western Mass show and I hit that same guy who showed up late with all those soul records. All I brought from him was Funkadelic "Cosmic Slop" and Fred Wesley & the JB's - "Damn Right I an Somebody" LP's for $4 each. Luckly they looked unplayed. You don't want to know what I missed out on since I got to him second after a dealer first went through his stuff.

  • Salvation Army and street finds from the past week (except for Congotronics and Guitar Explosion):

Pretty sure this is an OG, but without "Love Rap" on the flip.

Pete Klint Quintet - Shake (this 45 is great, I'd never heard of this before today, organ heavy blue eyed soul/garage version of the Sam Cooke song) I was expecting some jazz version, but was blown away as soon as I dropped the needle on it.

You were probably expecting a jazz version, 'cause, let's face it, most rock or soul bands don't use words like "quintet" in their name. But yeah, I like this single too, although I usually play the other side, "Walkin' Proud," which has a cool Motown/"Bread & Butter"/"Hi-Heel Sneakers" feel that would be cliched from anyone else, but somehow works here.

I have another Pete Klint Quintet single on Atlantic but it's not as good.

little question regarding softmachine, what does the english orig release of this french byg record look like? its a early 67 recording, done before the offical 1st album..

im not 100% sure, but from the sounds of it, its the same as this record (which i have):

    IMG src=http://www.disco-robertwyatt.com/images/soft_machine/images/RockGeneration8_big.gif>

yeah, looks right, come across several of those rock generation comps, never that one though, but does it actually contain all 9 tracks, doesnt look like it..?

Ha, that's funny - I thought I was the first to go through his
boxes, since I was standing there when he put them down and was going
through them before they were even all in - but I never saw the JB's "Damn
Right" ... the first thing I pulled was a real clean JB's "Food for Thought"
but he told me it wasn't for sale and took it back, which was a bad sign.
Yeah, he had those nice Funkadelics, and other decent stuff that I didn't
pull just because I already own it and wasn't looking for the flip n grip.
My boy pulled a sealed William DeVaughan and a clean Dramatics "Whatcha See"
... I have to admit I was having visions of finding true heat in those boxes...

... as far as that "dealer" goes, I wanted to punch that guy in his fucking
face, because there was a pile of 45's on the table, and I picked them up
and started to go through them, and he walked up and TOOK THEM FROM MY HAND,
which I assumed meant they were "his" that he had just put down, so I turned
away, but a minute later I realized he was just looking through them as a
buyer, and had somehow decided he had some sort of claim on them that allowed
him to rip out of my grasp like that. I talked some shit to him but he just
ignored me, he is lucky that I laugh off douche bags like that, if I was feeling
more aggro he might have gotten himself lit up.

Exactly my train of thought when I read Quintet. I agree the flipside is nice too.

Yeah, I know - but getting into fistfights over
what was probably some unremarkable VG- soul 45's
is not really the way to go. I'm just really amazed
at how obnoxious these grippers can behave.

Did Chess release much on Joe Tex? How early is that for him?

He has 3 Checker 45s, this one seems to be the most obscure of the Chess stuff as I have seen the other two with some regularity...this is the only time I have ever seen this particular one. Its from 1963 and I can honestly say it is the toughest Joe Tex I have heard...really fierce R&B.

And when he hit it big with "Hold What You've Got" for Dial/Atlantic, Chess released Hold On! It's Joe Tex, which contained all six songs from the Chess 45's plus four more that came out on Anna (which Chess distributed). The Annas were from 1960-61, I believe the Chess sides were recorded around '63.

The drummer has some serious NOLA second-line action going on on "Don't Play."

The A-side, "You Keep Her," is Joe's message to James Brown after James hooked up with Joe's soon-to-be-ex-wife.

Yeah, you were actually the 3rd person to look through his stuff. I think I saw you going though his crates as I was driving off in my silver car. I pulled that same Pass The Peas LP and he gave me the same story, but he actually had the first 3 JB's records there. The guy who got there before me got the "Doing it to Death" LP and I was able to grab the "Damn Right" LP (that's why you didn't see it.)

As far as that dealer guy goes, he's known as the "Music Man." No lie! That's his title. He's not human... he's not like you and I. The Music Man bows to know one. Richmond Record show came with some good deals today. Got a few records I have wanted for a minute for cheap. $35 for the bunch. I need to learn how to turn the date off on my camera.

LOL, I don't think we're talking about the same guy.
I didn't see the guy's crates until he was inside, so
I don't think it was me you saw ... the dealer I'm talking
about doesn't look like he was ever a pimp - more like a
part-time accountant for a frozen seafood company. He had
the table furthest down the lobby, just before the restrooms.

Cool info, that one pictured sounds like something I'd like.

Almost all of these came from the College Park Record Show (pics after the finds). All I can say about the show is WOW! This is less than a third of what I bought and luckily I sold more than I bought.
Give Johnny a few days and Good Records will be very well stocked (not like they aren't already).
    Anyway here goes:

Pics from the show (note the snazzy store banner!). There's talk of another show in the Fall.

The shirt says "fake records" but the records the Chimp brought out to sell were most definitely not fake. Add to that tables of records from the Nitekrawler, Birdman, Noz, Coffinjoe, and yours truly at Som Records and it was a digger's feast. Thanks y'all.

thrifts, fleas, and one yard sale unless otherwise noted:

rosa yemen is a 6 song 12" ep from 78 on ze featuring lizzy mercier descloux on vocals. very no wave, but not too in the no wave/post punk meets disco vein of say 'press colour'. palace lp arise therefore was found at local flea market in a box that had no other indie type of stuff. found that odd.

epitome 12" ep is supposedly ct's first punk band. motorhead is signed. megadeth etched anarchy in the uk 12" -- for resale. speedies reissue i picked up at double decker on the advice of jamie. and i am glad i picked it up. it's great power pop/punk.

another copy of that port authority record. mecki mark men lp is awesome. too bad the cover has some issues. dylan bootleg.

total chaos is some sort of rare austrian hip hop from the mid 90s. any of you euros know history on this group?

found two sealed copies of this random/indie 90s rap raer!

Total Chaos are originally from Linz / Austria, and then a few of them moved to Vienna. I think they still exist, I recently saw a new single. They are big in Austria and sometimes they play in Germoney... haven??t seen these cats in a while, but I??m sure they still do stuff. maybe check FM 4 Radio in Vienna.

  • I found that Abner Jay record recently too, along with "Cocaine Blues and Swaunee River Water". Really honest and interesting music. There's actually quite a bit of info available about him if you do a google search.

Waxidermy also has a review of "Cocaine Blues"

Just found that out myself. Luckily I don't think I paid more than $3 for it.
