Don't know how many of you are following this, but looks like it is game on (again) in East Timor.Yesterday the President - Jose Ramos-Horta - was ambushed and shot a few times in the chest and stomach; he's been evacuated to a hospital in Darwin. Doesn't sound like he is in great shape. They tried to take down the Prime Minister too in a separate incident, but he escaped without injury.Looks like it is the work of Alfredo Reinado - who was killed by return fire from Ramos-Horta's guards - an ex-military man, turned militia leader.Fingers crossed this doesn't get out of control - Australia has sent in another 120 troops and 70 police, so hopefully that will help. But it is by no means a 'stable' situation.http://iht.com/articles/2008/02/11/asia/timor.phphttp://www.theage.com.au/news/world/timor-on-the-edge/2008/02/12/1202760248201.html

  • Well after the vote for independence in '99 anti-independence groups (some say backed by Indonesia) started getting violent and a reasonably significant crisis ensured. Australia headed the UN peacekeeping force, and then provided security and administered some government functions while the country was finding its feet.
