some stuff here from today and yesterday. some chazza stuff, a root around in the plastic wax ??1 bins and some trade in another record shop
i couldnt leave the CAMP LO in a charity shop!! The top left looked like a rubbish new jazz record but is actually some slightly funky big band jazz funk from 74 - LES HOOPER. ...not the best record in the world but has some nice jazz-funk-ill-hip-hop-breaks that im pretty pleased with for ??1. I thought the GONG would be dogshit but has some massive fusion beats on - mixtape fodder? the moog record with the cow on the front has an absolutely killer version of "spinning wheel" on. one of the best moog LPs ive heard.
this lot were all dead cheap punts and im not really taken with any of them. the last track on the SHADOWS is quite fun. the BUTTON DOWN BRASS is rubbish from start to finish - first one ive picked up - are there any that are actually any good?? The lat track on the SHAWN PHILIPS sounds exactly like Teneacious D could have made it...
some 7's: MELANIE - "ruby tuesday" (lovely stuff) TREMOLOES - "instant whip" (woefully scratched to shit copy of this silly charity shop b-boy break nugget)
plus a bunch of truly dire dancehall 7's from a charity that will be going straight back. including a dancehall version of "eye of the tiger" !!!
Been on holiday for the past fortnight... so most of my finds have been of the "where is the best place in the lake to swim today / have you tried that vineyard's riesling 03 yet / hey look there's still beer in the fridge from the last visitors" variety. Back to work tomorrow - crap. Stopped of on the way back North in Wellington and picked up a few decent 7s from a couple of shops.
Hang On In There / Stovall Sisters (Reprise) I'm Glad You're Mine / Al Green (London - weird NZ pressing seems they screwed the labels up) Peice Of My Heart / Erma Franklin (Shout) What Can You Bring Me / Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band (Warner)
The only stomachable side of a Tom Jones LP is side 1 on the one pictured, all top soul covers, there is also a version of "It's A Man's World" on side 2, the rest is his usual schlock though. Everly Bros doing soul/R&B stuff is cool. 45s are: The Tams - Hey Girl Don't Bother Me Inez Foxx - Mockingbird The Sandells - Endless Summer The Supersonics - Perfidia
the Charlie Gore is a King budget label thing isn't it?
---
Yeah.........was a subsidiary of King...had a strange list of releases.....mostly country/hillbilly LP's but had a couple of great split blues releases......one by Jimmy Rushing/Champion Jack DuPree and another by John Lee Hooker/Sticks McGhee.
Most of them are good and all are rare, especially in good condition.
That Dion & the Belmonts record seriously rules. Nice to finally have the Bobby Taylor. Aardvark is a vintage copy, but seems like maybe a 2nd pressing, with the label being just red and black (no silver) and the cover art seems dull compared to pics I saw of the OG. Hmmm.
Freddie Scott was dull, but I kinda expected it - Columbia was all about stealing the soul when they put out records by Black artists, huh? Still, I'm a Freddie fan, so I'm glad to pick up a cheap copy. Frank Hayhurst is an unmitigated absolute
scooped a bunch of 45s for cheap, but this one stood out to me. I understand that it may sound underwhelming to some, but there is a charm to it I really dig..almost has this Jamaican/African thing going on with the horns...however, I cant find any info on it whatsoever..the flip btw is a straight doo-wop number...
also found a clean copy of this, strange record to find around these parts in minty condition(may be the coolest cover I have ever seen) the track "Hoon Abhi Main Jawan" is killer:

I like that Hamilton Affair record. The liners are pretty whoa, how it's a kiddie-soul tribute record to their then recently deceased father, singer Roy Hamilton.

yeah, I had heard about it through the internets but really had no idea it was a kiddee soul LP. The cover was a little damaged, but I've already located a cheap copy on Ebay to replace it with.
Outside of this and the eddie Russ LP's is there anything else on Monument worth looking for?

Strangely enough I was back to WGTN yesterday for some recording sessions. And picked up Thelma Houston / Jumping Jack Flash on a mint promo 45... not bad.
Got home this morning and found Dee Edwards / Why Can't There Be Love (VG+ looking but NM- playing) on GM in the mailbox..... hell yeah. Not the Bumpshop issue, but beggars etc etc.... Cheeeeeep too.

I bet, alot of early King stuff is usually tore-the-fuck up when you find it - people seemed to play it - 'hifi party' music lol
the John Lee Hooker lp side is probably comprised of his Deluxe stuff I assume?
