For a number of years from the 30s through to today, New Zealand Motorcycling would send a team of the best NZ racers to compete at the IOM TT races, back in those days guys were getting killed all over the place. My grandfather was chosen for the 1956 team but my grandma refused to let him go with two young kids at home & a 3rd on the way, possibly a wise move. He always said he would have liked to have seen how he would have done had he been able to go. At some points there is only a couple of meters margin of error before you get collected by a stone wall or lamp post
There's a story about a boat full of refugees from Nazi Germany arriving in the Isle Of Man, collectively shitting bricks when they saw the flag flying in the harbour. Must have thought they'd gone to Jersey by mistake.
