Dennis Deyoung >>>> that guy from R.E.O. that does Time/Life ads now, too. TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, WE'LL MAKE HIIIIIISSSSSTORYYY ... HONEY, YOU & I -CAUSE I'LL TAKE ANY RISK, TO TIE BACK THE HANDS OF TIME ... AND BE WITH YOU HERE TONIGHT ... WHO DARES TO RIDE FOR THE SPEEDWAGON?

Oh yeah. As someone who came of age when these bozos were dominating the charts, if I ever see that Kevin Cronin guy on the street I'm gonna grab his nose and twist like Moe Howard.

  • Balance of "hits" - REO had "Can't fight this feeling" and "Keep on Loving you", while Styx had "Mr. Roboto", "lady" and "come sail away".

This hugely favors Styx in my opinion, their songs, while not good, are at least varied. REO basically kept making the same song. I'm going with Styx.

    cosign. "lady" is my jam.

I think they played it on "its always sunny in philadelphia". they play some great music on that show.

Maybe because it sounds like it's being sung by Clay Aiken's effeminate brother??

Styx is the bomb of arena style futuristic gothic wizard rock. The songs written by James Youg (?) the guitar player are nice cuz they are more heavy rock compaired to the elf like work of Dennis DeYoung. Plus, Dennis was a total fruit cake live doing all kinds of spell casting vouge action.

They guy from REO just did this weird arm movement over and over that looked like he was taking a DUI test ont he side of the road. REO had a pretty good guitarist, but other wise BLAH!

You also have to give it to Styx for started the Mr. Roboto tour with a 15 min movie that constantly got booos!

Styx did songs about cocaine and wizzard!!!!!

REO did songs about girls and the Little Rascals.....

I'll take the Speedwagon over Styx, although I think a Speedwagon-Foreigner battle is a better match-up.

Journey clearly buries both bands, although they never had a #1 single.

  • pickwick33pickwick33 8,946 Posts
Not a fan of either band, but "Golden Country" is one of the few worthwhile songs REO ever did. It could have been an American "Stairway To Heaven," except that "Free Bird" earned that distinction a few years later. This was from REO's second album (1972), when they were still a regional boogie band and the power ballads hadn't kicked in yet.

  • Hmmm

    Wait a minute

    Let me think

    Ok

    You know what

    THEY BOTH SUCK!!!!!!

Please be serious. Foreigner reduces Speedwagon to dust.

It is not even a contest. I guess maybe 80's Foreigner has
some material watered-down enough to be comparable with R.E.O.,
but even the schlock is a laugher when placed head-to-head.
For example: the part right before the second verse in "I Wanna Know
What Love Is" where he goes "uuuunnnnnhhhhhhhaaAAAAAHHHHHAHHHAYYYAHHHH"
is total 80's face-shred, whereas the point in "I Can't Fight This
Feeling Anymore" where the vocals come in and dude sounds like an
8-year-old only child at his first Christmas recital is a low point
for masculinity in general and the 80's power ballad in particular.

Compelling evidence, to the say the least. Can REO even top Loverboy, then?
