I know Big Brother can monitor online use, but does anyone know of a person who actually got fired from using the net too much or surfing porn?
yup me for internet use not porn, i got sacked from a shit office monkey job a few years ago, they spent 7 weeks monitoring my internet and email use (secret squirrel style) and then one friday just before xmas sat me down for a 'chat' and dumped this novels worth of emails and web pages on the table to line of 'it's not good...'. They even had emails of me talking to a friend about how i could get round their web filters, i just left there and then to meet my housemate who coincidentally also had just been sacked - we went to the pub. On a side note whats the story with sackings/firings in the US? can they just sack you? here (uk) you would have a unfair dismissal case on your hands if there was even a hint of anything dodgy.

it was an after morning college classes job...reception and desk work. usually it was slow as fuck. so i went online. nothing crazy. all big sites were blocked like Myspace etc. i went to Cnn, Soulstrut, Weather, Wikipedia. and my colleges site to do some online coursework. no one EVER said anything to me.
one afternoon i went to Wikipedia ...blocked....CNN blocked i was like what the fuck?
but Soulstrut worked. so i made a post about it. thought it was a fluke. posted calling my IT team and company a bunch of assholes. IT guy walked past me like 3 times after that and said nothing.
next day i come in and my boss is at the desk and is like "we need to talk" and she sits me down in the conference room and says "is this you?" and pulls out a printed out sheet of the Strut post...which was super funny cuz my avatar is Frickin' Marlo from the Wire...a black dude haha....
she was prolly like what the fuck???
she even read back some of it to me and i couldnt help but smirk cuz it was too unreal for me. she said the internet is the companies livelihood then she told me to go home.
Well... I'm this close to throwing fists at work today so maybe I'll be sitting down with HR in the near future
In my experience here in Silicon Valley, companies fully expect a solid amount of online time from their employees. Productivity has taken a serious turn for the worse. The tradeoff is that people are expected to stay in the office longer. I'd rather bust through my work in 8 hours and get the fuck outta dodge, but that's just not the formula anymore.
