  • Sidewalk was a sublabel of Tower (dist. by Capitol), ca. mid-late sixties. Just like Tower, Sidewalk released quite a few biker and hippie exploitation-flick soundtracks, as well as the Freakout U.S.A. comp, with all these garage/psych acts that probably didn't exist outside of this album.

I have "Shadows"/"Feel The Music" by the Vejtables, a Bay Area garage-rock band, as well as another Sidewalk 45 by Gypsy Boots, this weird street person from the L.A. hippie scene who tracked an entire LP for the label.

There are a lot of great one-off 45s on Sidewalk and Tower that I dig. Seemingly more interesting 45s than lps. Discography? Don't know.

Seemingly more interesting 45s than lps.

Many if not most of those 45's listed in the discography
above are on the various LP's. Lots of soundtrack stuff.

I'm more curious about Freakout U.S.A. as mentioned by
Pickwick, cause I'm not sure those bands are all studio
outfits and one-off's, but I haven't found much info to
say either way. I'm pretty sure the Mugwumps were real,
and Glass Family were real and have a Dead connection.

Isn't there a Glass Family LP on ABC or WB???

    On WB - sorta sought-after:

That is definitely the same band - in the 70's there
is also a disco Glass Family, although I have no idea
if there is a connection in any way.

actually the 45s I dig the most aren't on that discography, but you are right that most have appeared on various lps in one form or another.

    Wanna share any?

Just the names, I mean - not looking for but
wouldn't mind a couple of titles to look out for ...

I'll try to find them when I get back home and post them up. I'm a sucker for cool Sidewalk/Tower 45s.

  • DT 5911 -- "Mary Jane" O.S.T.

    Great record.

  • I'm pretty sure the Mugwumps were real

There was another Mugwumps on Warner Bros. that featured Zal Yanovsky (from the Lovin' Spoonful) and Mama Cass Elliot, but they were totally unrelated to the Sidewalk Mugwumps.

And that Vejtables 45 I mentioned...come to think, I believe that was on Uptown. I was going from memory and confused the two labels. Uptown was supposed to be Tower's R&B label, but somehow lost focus and started releasing anything, just like Loma (Warners' soul label from the same time).

  • i like that record a lot. got it in the free bin at a radio station about 13 yrs ago. love the side-long medley on the flip.
always wanted to see the movie too, it looks dope from the pix.
