Matthew Herbert Big Band - "Everything's Changed" is my favourite lidell song. Nice phrasing, doesn't over do it...
I also really like
"Game of Fools" and "Daddy's Car".
I agree that sometimes he's right on the mark, other times he's off. I think when he gives himself some more space, slower stuff, stays away from the glitch type stuff it works. I like a lot of singers you can tell are not natural singers but have over time taught themselves to sing or had lessons whatever and just have a good sense of melody and phrasing - people like Benny Sings or even Mark Murphy - I heard some Mark Murphy white label on giles peterson's show? killed it. I haven't checked if he's putting new stuff. anyone know about this?
cosign on Lewis Taylor, the best UK soul artist of the last 5-10 years, puts stuff oout on his Slow Reality label.
As for JL, I've got an amazing supercollider 12" with a tune on it called 'Damn Cold Way of Living', where he sings over a massive, techno-sounding breakbeat track. His voice sounds incredible on that song, check it out.
