Mel Cheren, "Godfather of Disco" and head of West End Records, passed this afternoon.Mel was a music lover, human rights activist, AIDS activist, and had one of the biggest hearts in the business.RIP Mel

    wow. this is terrible. he found out he had aids only very recently. how he made it through the 80s was a straight mystery to me (just thinking of all the infected dudes he slept with) let alone the 90s. almost made another 10.

    West End was easily the best of the new york indy labels, Mel ran this label while smoking angel dust EVERY DAY. wish more people had balls like that these days.

    the only dude who was crazy enough to pay arthur russell 25 large for the MALE version of "is it all over my face". luckily larry had the female vocals added later!

    i wanted to stay at Mel's bed and breakfast.
