where can i cop windows xp for cheap?

my computer at home got a nasty virus and ill have to format and install windows xp on it again. problem is that the xp that is on it now was installed by my boy and he cant locate the key.are there any websites to get an official copy relatively cheap?i cant upgrade to vista since my studio soundcards will not work with vistathis really sucksthanks

    When things are this bad I think it's best to get on the phone to you computer tech friend.

    Last time I had serious Pc problems, dude just came round with windows, with everything installed already (word, cubase, photoshop ect.), on a USB and ghost copied it onto my hardrive. Blam.

    well im a pc person myself, but i got a mac for Microwave. im not interested in ilife, ipods, ichats or any of that nonsense
    the computer is slim and portable but i already had to send it in to get serviced for some freak occurence that happened last week.
    cats at the genius bar had no clue what happened

    There is no need to buy anything if you have the install media already. If you can't get booted due to the virus, make a boot CD on another machine, grab the key using the util I posted earlier after it is booted, then re-install windows using that key. You could even backup all of the data you wanted to an external drive too before the re-install.

    I always pay for my OS. But I guess that's cause I've always gotten them cheap.
    I can remember getting retail sealed box copies of XP for 30 bucks when it first came out. Leopard cost 9 bucks and Linux can be FREE!

    I did just grab Vista Ultimate a bit back for just over $100.


    You can grab an OEM of XP for around a hundred. Check out craigslist for cheaper copies tho (OEM's for around 40-50, retail around $100)

    And then there is always many many many not so legit sources.

    i'm pissed off at M$ right now, i'm a mac dude but i got an old PC laying around that i'm trying to get setup so my good mac doesnt' get taken over all the time. the only way i know how to make windows not suck is to do a complete format/re-install of the OS...the problem is i've done that too many times so every time i re-install it i have to call the microsoft 800 number and promise them that i'm just re-installing the OS on the same computer (i am)

    shit like that makes people want to bootleg

    If you are reinstalling fairly often you can make an "image" of the disk using Ghost and save yourself a lot of time installing drivers and software.

    Funny. I went through all this before. XP is crap. It's runs like shit. MS fucked it up etc, etc, etc when it was released. Did SP1 make it better? Yes. But I had very little problems when I started using XP. I'm finding the same thing with Vista. Mind you, the dumbest ass thing MS did was drop a million versions of the OS. When really they should have just released Ultimate.

    But on a whole, I'm happy using it. I will not go back to XP. Though, I'm sure at work I'll be using it for quite awhile.

    Leopard is pretty good also. I'm using it often at home. But I doubt I'll ever be a full convert.

    Maybe I'll build a Hackintosh...

    i ended up formatting my c: drive and installing xp fresh.
    i cant seem to install cakewalk sonar though. it freezes at the end of the installation. just when i thought everything was straight

    Does the entire machine lockup during the install? Or when retrying the install does it lock up at or around the same spot? It could be a bad block somewhere in memory. Swapping out your RAM is a quick test or fix for that. Of course, it could just be the installer.

    it locks up on the same file in the installation
    the weird thing is that it isnt installing a file. its skipping it. i looked at some info on the dll its skipping, and it has something to do with .net
    i will look into how to uninstall .net if thats possible to bypass that whole thing

    i bought a computer recently that had the harddrive totally cleaned.
    so i need windows xp pro installed to get it to work.
    and i definately dont have 200 bucks to get the disc! which puts me in a lame situation,. ive spent the last couple days tryin to find it for free or cheap on the intranet.. can anybody help me out? this is going to b my music production / digitialized record computer,
    wisconsins gots me all snowed in and i need to get on some produktion!
