so im about to check out a hiphop collection,from phone conversations,80s to mid90s...prolly about 3000 records in decent shape. seeing it in person tomorrow...but during our last conversation, i asked a ballpark figure that he was expecting. the answer: ten. 
i told him it would be great if i felt it was worth dropping ten on it and that we'd have to just wait and see if i could do more or less. but damn...ten g's

I would still look at it though, but never blow that much wod on a hip-hop collection.
You do not want 3K hip hop records taking up space around you. Rocafella promos & shitty 1986 12"s for dayzz...and you're average DJ's idea of "decent shape" would be about VG/VG-.
I've been through similar collections too many times.

A local DJ in a record pool here was selling his entire hip hop collection (about 5000 records) and was asking 10Gs...no picking anything out, it was all or nothing. This was a few years ago, and a lot of DJs passed.
i imagine a record shop would give between 500-1000 for that many hiphop records.
i definitely dont want to give him a crappy deal, but like yall already mentioned...not trying to insulate my house with ill all skratch records.

I mean, unless there is alot of heat in there. But seriously, for that many records, most of us weren't spending that kinda coin 5 years ago buying in large qualities.
Go check out it and get a feel for whats really in there and go from there.
I've rarely if ever have seen a collection that looked like what was described on the phone.

People don't even know when their records were from. I'm betting way more mid to late 90s than late 80s to mid 90s.
People don't even know what genre their records are. I'm betting more R&B and Dance than hip-hop.
All that said, check them out. If you don't want them recommend someone else that you think will buy them.

I've always tried to figure out the "Golden Ratio" when going in to a collection. You know you will get 80% crap, 15% OK, and maybe 5% great. Maybe less than that. Depends on your standards I guess. After you go through 5 to 10 boxes you can see if you are getting better than average or worse per the ratio. Almost have to unless you have time to see all 10K if there really are 10K.
Hip-Hop is getting dumped cheap now (by non collectro microwave djs). I wonder if this is the start, the middle, or the end of this trend.
i'm gonna check things out tonight...but my man is mostly likely in for a disappointment that he cant translate a dela single into $25.

Yeah, I mean, really...that comes to more than $3 per record for buying in serious quantity!
I've passed on 10,000-record "80s/90s" hip-hop collections for as little as $500 in favor of cherry picking 100-200 records from the whole lot. It would have to be the certified collection of Afrika Bambatta himself for it to even approach being worth it. Even at that, just the fact that it goes into the 90s suggests that it's not the kind of collection that's gonna have raer gems around every corner. Maybe a grip of unplayed KMD or Lord Finesse promos and three or four $100 random rap gems if you're lucky. Come to think of it, has anyone here *ever* encountered a collection of 1000+ hip hop records where the majority (or even 25% of it) was majorly rare or uncommonly tasteful stuff?

I think you should just be straight with the dude and convey its true market value to him. Tell him you are going to have to pay for storage and moving it, not to mention (but do mention) that it will in no way be a quick turnover.
I don't think you should be paying more than 20-40 cents per record for a collection that large in that genre. Dude is not going to be happy, especially if its his personal collection. But You cant pay someone more than its worth, and it still has to be worth it for you. A reasonable and fair price would be between $500-$1,000 depending on what is there and its condition.`
Void and I recently had a similar offer, 3,000 hip hop records. The dude asked for $1400 in the ad he had placed. Then it was down to $750 over the phone and We ended giving him 5 when we got there. But the guy didn't care about the records, they weren't his to begin with and he needed the space. This might mean making a realistic offer and having dude stew over it for 6 months before he decides to call you back if he has a personal attachment to them.

Funny, seeing you post that pic. There was a time when we would sell hundreds of an individual title on bootlegs. And make alright dough.

feel bad for his collection,though.he doesnt want to part with it cheap, but he's probly not going to get more than $700 for it
