when you try to buy championships by throwing huge amounts of cash around it doesn't always work. you have to have CHEMISTRY, not a whole bunch of big name players.

Actually, I would argue that the Yanks this year had chemistry ...
like I said in the MLB thread, it was IMO one of the all-time great
managing jobs by Torre to rally his team to recover from their
horrid start and be the best team in the league in the second half
of the season. What the Yankees were lacking this year wasn't chemistry,
it was PITCHING. This is why I find it extra absurd that Torre got so
shafted - he did an amazing job with what he had this year, massive
    payroll or not.

Was he really "shafted" or was this a ploy by management to avoid firing Torre?

"We'll offer you a low number that youl'll obviously reject, so you can be perceived as leaving on your own terms." "We both know this relationship was way past its prime."

  • Yeah that's exactly what it was - management saving face after realizing that firing Torre would not be a popular decision.

That's what I mean by "shafted" - that ploy.
The fact that they felt he deserved firing after what
he did this season is laughable to me. But then again.
I supported Grady Little getting fired by the Red Sox after
he brought them to Game 7 of the ALCS, just because he left
Pedro in too long ... so maybe I'm a hypocrite.

That's what I think too. Remember, they wanted to fire him mid-season and splashed an ultimatum in the papers that he'd be fired if they got swept by the Red Sox back in June or something like that. There was also debate after last season about whether or not to fire him. I think both sides were done with each other at this point and the whole dog and pony show with the contract was the best way they could end the relationship.

Torre has been on "Probation" since the Red Sox knocked them out.

How long did Pat Riley stay w/ the Lakers after the last Championship?
How long did Phil Jackson stay w/ the Bulls........?

Dudes talmbout "Torre's not in it for the money....."

Any body signing w/ THE YANKEES would be silly not to be about money. This is not a game.

Right, but it wasn't the pay "cut" that made him
walk away, it was the weakened position taking that
cut would put him in when dealing with his players.
Any manager on a reduced salary and being made to
take salary incentives would be an absolute lame duck.
