The Whispers - A Song For Donny-has got me open recently.Name some good ones. Any Genre. Is this a lost art? Where was Luther VanDross' tribute song? Max Roach?
Comments
It's too soon to tell for Max.
As far as others:
"Night Shift" - Commmodores (Jackie Wilson, Marvin Gaye)
"Hillbilly Heaven" - Tex Ritter (early sixties tribute to various deceased country singers and campy as all hell, but I like it anyway...Ritter himself was admitted into Hillbilly Heaven in 1974)
"A Tribute To A King" - William Bell (Otis Redding)
"Soul Heaven" - Dixie Drifter (Nat "King" Cole, Dinah Washington, Sam Cooke)
Is this for Copeland or Copeland singing for the Albert Collins?
My eyes well up to this and Diana Ross - Missing You.
It's Copeland singing for Sam Cooke, with shout-outs to
Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington and I think a couple of
others ...
I can think of one I will ride for:
Needle and The Damage Done - Neil Young (might be for a guitar player in Crazy Horse, not sure.)
Indeed. But there's still a handful of songs out there.
Trae and H.A.W.K. - Swang
Trae and Z-Ro - Miss My Dawg
The Lox - We'll Always Love Big Poppa
H.A.W.K. and Big Moe - Home of S.U.C.
Did DJ Screw ever get a tribute song?
Jam Master Jay?
Tupac?

Cool. The OG isnt a Tribute song if i recall. Its from the Cooley High Soundtrack.
And maybe the BIIMen video shows images of passed artists but did Babyface n Them really have that in mind while doin the song.
Tribute Songs NO= Death Songs.
I love Maureen by Sade but Maureen is just a personal friend.
This seems unlikely.

Another one that came to mind was Pretenders "Back On The Chain Gang" in tribute to James Honeyman-Scott.
Also, "T.R.O.Y" in tribute to Trouble T-Troy - can't believe nobody said that already.
And if you remember, it was played in the movie right after Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs' character (Cochise?) died, during the funeral scene.
I think this one breaks the "bad tribute song" curse, no?
Unlike, say, "Miss American Pie."
To this day, that Beatdown always confuses me. They beat him down and one of the last punches makes him spin into the steel Subway column? So he dies of a concussion?
