External hard drives w/ networking....

Is "networking" what you call it? Anyways I have one of those western digital external hard drives that you can connect with an ethernet port to your wireless router and then access it's files wirelessly. Usually I've been just keeping it on all the time even if I'm not using it. Will that shorten the lifespan of my HD?
