I've approached a few junk hauler/demo guys and asked what they do with records. Every single one said "we usually just toss them" - I gave them my # on a scrap of paper, but a card would be far more likely to get a response. The images flashing through my mind when they said "we just toss them" were nightmarish.
what is the trick to pullin heat from these storage joints?
I need more questions like this in my head. My life is a joke.
not my fault you hang here and don't drop any musical knowledge/mp3s/record reviews just a steady stream of almost but not quite funny comments to ease the slow death/boredom of your pathetic amalgamation of DNA good thing you reproduced we need many more like you by chance do you eat meat and drive an SUV? or prehaps you WANT to own an SUV this way you can haul more records from storage lockers and beef up your amazing collection and of course drive your fat wife around town shopping
Kala I love your posting style but the first line/would be sentence? makes you out to be a douchetakkkulous buttnugget. JLR got more mp3 heat than you could evar poast up here. Apologise to the Rav4-driving chubby chaser already.
Ive been to a fair share of storage locker auctions. It ended up being a waste of time, as the junkers and flea market dudes are cutthroat and will overpay to show who's boss. Unless you see a massive locker full of records, its not going to be worth your time to throw 100s of bucks on a locker that has a few boxes of records, that might turn out to be turds, and then you're stuck cleaning out a locker full of junk. Let the junkers to their thing and just catch em at the FLEAS
yup.
I'm not disposing of soiled matresses for a box of Supertramp records.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've figured out too. Sometimes it's fun to just go to the auctions for entertainment value but I have yet to see a locker filled with records. They are out there, no doubt, but it might be one every 500 lockers, and that's a lot of time and driving to catch the right break. Then the locker might turn out to be all techno or common rap records. Rich's idea about handing out business cards sounds cool. But most of the big storage places (ie Public Storage) seem like they run a pretty tight ship. In other words, they won't sell stuff piecemeal prior to the auction because the locker holder has the right to make good on their rent up until the day of the auction. Of course a low-paid storage worker may very well be bribable...

Huh? Plaese to keep your trades out of this thread.
That said, yeah let them bid on rooms full of plastic jewelry, porno mags and um maybe soiled mattresses. If they get hold of a shitload of records they'll be in touch. Just got to get to know THEY that's all.

My larger point being that, while the whole storage unit thing might sound glamerous, it has to rate among the absolute LEAST hassle free ways to get records out there. The dudes who bid on these units are junk guys. They sell everything. You can't even really tell what's in these lockers until you've paid. You're likely going to end up with 10 truck-loads of baby toys for every box of records. And as Jesse said, the bigger places do run a tight ship. You'd have to grease a lot of palms and make a lot of freinds to do it right.
i used to go to the auctions three days a week when i was really hustling records... its a hassle.
the best way to do it is to make friends with the buyers at these spots and only buy the records from whatever lockers they purchase (which could have a ton of crap in them). i worked with a few folks who would call me whenever they got a load of records and i would go check it out. if the loads didnt look good to me i told them. pulled the stuff i think they could get a few more bucks for and tell em to sell the rest for a buck or whatever. be honest (somewhat) with them and theyll trust you enough because then YOURE the record guy. once other dealers find out about you (which happens once youre actually buying collections from dealers and not just cherry pickin) youll find more folks coming up to you at the fleas or garage sales and talking to you about vinyl.
ONCE AGAIN: be honest but only as honest as you need to be. theres no reason to go telling everyone what records are really worth.
spread out though. if the cats at your local storage auction on stick to the area youre in find out who travels to the far out storage spots. like i had folks who just ran the fremont to berkeley spots but had folks who did the central valley as well. when youre really balling youll have folks in other cities or states doing it for you. though you have to be travelling a lot to really make that happen.

HA HA, looks like it finally arrived. This was from a peruvian seller, right? One day this will be a $200 record, trust me

not sure how it is down there, but the locker auctions in Chicago don't do single items. You gotta win the whole locker, or nothing.
Here's the deal......
They will only call you if there is at least a box or two of records.
Getting that call gets you to see them before the auction.
If there is only one good record, you offer the dude $50 bucks for it (This also guarantees you another call next time records turn up)
If there is a bunch of good stuff you pay dude accordingly.
And every once in a while you hit the 1,000+ record jackpot.

Yes. A necessity for anyone pursuing records outside of local stores.

I can see why you've taken yourself out of the running.
The number of people I'd have to actually talk to would require a near leathal dose of Xanax.
You have a bad attitude about drugs.

Knowledge jewel has been dropped. Thanks J***in.
I'll remember that the next time I come over.
Maker sighting
$30 to $40 dollars got me 8 (100)boxes of 100 plus records. Those were the days.
